Fred Thompson announces bid for 2008 Presidency
Source: WBIR- NBC

Former Tennessee Senator told Jay Leno tonight he will run for the Republican nomination for president.

The announcement confirmed months of speculation that Thompson has been gearing up for a presidential run. On a conference call last week, Thompson told close associates he would make a major announcement this week. Campaign staffers said Thompson would officially enter the race via a webcast Thursday.

After the announcement Thompson discussed policy issues in detail.

He talked at length about the war on terror saying, "There is a global war going on. We are the main target." He wouldn't rule out military action against Iran and when asked about troops in Iraq he said, "We stay until we get the job done."

10. And the beauty part of it is...
...Mom gets to keep her Law & Order reruns, for now at least.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070831/ap_on_en_tv/tv_thompson_s_reruns

NEW YORK - While Fred Thompson's "Law & Order" character disappears from NBC starting Saturday because of concerns over federal equal time provisions, cable viewers will still have plenty of opportunities to see his District Attorney Arthur Branch.

TNT will air 23 episodes of the drama next week alone, apparently unworried about limiting Branch's airplay even as the Tennessee Republican plans to announce his presidential candidacy.

"TNT has no plans to alter its schedule," spokeswoman Shirley Powell said, a stance that could provoke a fight in the courts or before the Federal Communications Commission.

Equal time rules require TV stations to provide the same airtime to opponents when a candidate appears on the air. The many exceptions — news shows, talk shows, interviews, documentaries — essentially mean the rules apply to entertainment programming.

I could give a flying banana about Thompson's candidacy. I was, however, growing concerned that Mom might become Law & Order-deprived. She watches a lot of Law & Order, especially when the Yankees are off. What a relief! :P

I'm surprised he didn't stay on Law and Order so he could continue spouting his RW bullshit like he's done for years. Sometimes I just wanted to put my fist through the TV.

15. Please, bring on Frederick of Hollywood
He's so "dynamic" and "virile", he'll make Bob Dole's '96 campaign look like Lollapalooza.

Here's how I imagine Fred's campaign:

He's an actor, no that there's anything wrong with that. And I know he was a senator but I mean come on.

19. For his next role
he is memorizing all of the conservative talking points. He will become the projection of everything that the conservatives want but find lacking in all of the other candidates - anti-choice, pro-gun, anti-gay (in a big way) pro-war, yada yada. This has been pre determined by his running of a 30 second ad which will give the lazy conservatives all the information they need to back a candidate. NOw they don't have to even think about it anymore.

21. He's got a lot to offer ...

He's phoney, lazy, simple minded, pompous, arrogant, ideologically blind, hypocritical, poorly spoken (ironic considering his profession) and corrupt. What's not to like for the average GOP voter? I predict he will most definitely be a front runner.

23. People, don't joke about this, Fred will be a dangerous competitor.
Look at the support he has received so far even though he has just now entered the race. He has many backers & will probably soon challenge Guliani for GOP frontrunner. If you don't think this guy is something to worry about, just look at *.

24. What an underwhelming announcement, but I agree with the
last poster about not dismissing Thompson. Remember, the Republican base is not the sharpest bunch of tacks on the planet. They'll see that shiny, red, pickup truck and a movie star and race to the polls because they want to have a beer with Fred.

26. Leno's L.A. audience are a bunch of applause robots
Leno's audience never seems to have any idea what they are reacting to. They clap and hoot in some kind of automatic Pavlovian response like they're directing wired to the APPLAUSE meter. Thompson could have announced he just picked a big bugger back in the green room and they would cheered just as loud.
