Germany arrests 3 in alleged airport, U.S. base plot

By Erik Kirschbaum and Sabine Siebold 47 minutes ago

BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany has arrested three men it suspects of belonging to an Islamist terrorist group and planning attacks on Frankfurt international airport and a major U.S. military base, German officials said on Wednesday.

Defence Minister Franz Josef Jung told German television that the three had planned to launch attacks soon and described the plot as "very concrete."

"There was an imminent security threat," Jung said.

The arrests come a day after Danish police conducted raids and took eight young Muslims into custody whom they suspect of plotting a bomb attack and having links to al Qaeda.

They also occurred less than a week before the sixth anniversary of the September 11 2001 hijacked plane attacks on targets in the United States.

The Federal Prosecutor's Office in Karlsruhe, which was to hold a news conference later on Wednesday, said that raids had been carried out in several German states on Tuesday.

2. Cultural differences...
Edited on Wed Sep-05-07 08:30 AM by Crayson
In Europe it's not common to show off arrested people nor peoples full name and address to the press.
Europe tends to not destroying one's life before a judge decides over guilty or innocent.
Even alleged terrorist have rights.

Edit:
By the way.
The photo on www.spiegel.de shows the arrested person without hood, but anonymized.
(sorry, can only link to the front page and the photo will eventually disappear, you have to pay to read the hwole article)

Corrective: Germany-Terror Story

Wednesday September 5, 2007 6:46 PM

NEW YORK (AP) - In a Sept. 5 story about the arrest
of three terror suspects in Germany, The Associated
Press reported erroneously that Defense Minister Franz
Josef Jung specifically mentioned the U.S. Ramstein Air
Base and Frankfurt's international airport as targets.
In response to a reporter's question mentioning the
airport and base, Jung confirmed the police operation
but declined to provide further details on possible
targets. In a news alert on the same story, the AP
erroneously reported that German federal prosecutor
Monika Harms said the targets were Ramstein and
Frankfurt airport. She said U.S. facilities were
targeted but did not specify which ones.

5. New Al Queada plot to blow up planes on 9/11 smashed
Source: daily mail

Police have smashed a suspected al Qaeda terror cell nursing a "profound hatred of US citizens" plotting to bomb civilian and military jets.

The force of the planned explosions would have been worse than the train bombings in Madrid and the Tube and bus attacks in London on 7 July, 2005, according to German security sources. Those attacks killed 191 and 52 people respectively.

Three men aged 22, 28 and 29 have been arrested in Germany days before they planned to strike, and bomb-making equipment and explosives have been seized
The arrests come a day after Danish police conducted raids and took eight young Muslims into custody whom they suspect of plotting a bomb attack and having links with al Qaeda. No direct link has yet been established between the two plots.

Federal prosecutor Monika Harms said the three suspects had bought 700kg (1,500lbs) of hydrogen peroxide to make massive bombs. She said: "We have prevented what we believe would have been the worst terror attacks ever on German soil".

She declined to name specific targets but said the suspects had an eye on institutions and establishments frequented by Americans in Germany, including discos, pubs and airports.

Citing unnamed security sources in Berlin, the broadcaster Suedwestfunk said Frankfurt International Airport and US Ramstein Air Base were among targets.

Joerg Ziercke, the head of Germany's federal crime office, said the men had a "profound hatred of US citizens".

German security sources have reportedly said the men belonged to the Islamic Jihad, an Egyptain terrorist group that merged with al Qaeda in 2001.

6. What if the plan was for them to get busted, while the "real"
plans are still in motion? While eevryone pats themselves on the back, perhaps there are other, more determined folks still toiling away.:(

17. Dunno 'bout that.
Radio news said they had 35% H2O2.

Add a bit of acetone (not all that hard to get), a bit of sulfuric acid (also not dreadfully hard to obtain), and **boom**.

Now, the "boom" may happen a bit prematurely. Or not. I think the 7/7 explosives used that recipe.

22. Kg is weight... liquids are not measured units of weight.
it would have been reported as a unit of volume. You can't make powdered H2O2

14. I think the density is close enough to water to say 700 kg, 700 l, whatever it takes.
Been a long time since I worked with hydrogen peroxide in concentrated form. If it was the 2% antiseptic solution type, this is utter bullshit. With high enough concentrations, however, you can make some things that go bang.

20. If by 'wrong' skin tone you mean white
then yes. Two of the three arrested man are Germans, the third is a Turkish national born in Germany. And if you know anything about the country you'll know that isn't even anything special.

21. Do you have a link to that story.
The yahoo link doesn't talk about where the suspects allegedly obtained the hydrogen peroxide, or any of the other possible ingredients like acetone (used as nail polish remover) or sulphuric acid.
