Chinese Villagers Clash With Police in Land Dispute; Paper Reports 1 Killed
Source: AP

BEIJING (AP) -- At least two people were injured and two detained when villagers and police clashed over a land dispute in northeastern China, a witness said Sunday. A newspaper reported one person was killed in the incident.

Farmers in Yutian, a village in Heilongjiang province, set up roadblocks Saturday to protest a new commercial housing project requiring the razing of their homes, said a villager reached by telephone.

Residents were also angry over the meager compensation offered by the developers, said the villager said, who declined to give his name for fear of retaliation by local authorities.

"The roads were blocked by many villagers around 7 a.m.," he said. "About three hours later, anti-riot police were called and about 100 of them showed up and there was a clash."

1. My family will be boycotting these Olympics.
A small gesture for sure, but we just cannot support these animals.

We also make every effort not to buy Chinese SHIT.

If we aren't careful here, we too will resemble China.

2. Eminent domain.
I can't remember details, but our eminent domain rules have been changed so that people can be displaced for economic gain.

Sounds like what is happening in this article. People are being displaced by a developer.

4. Land disputes have been getting increasingly vociferous in China
I don't see many in the news - duh, when China gets to control what's reported - but I have seen more and more in the last few years. Some had the feeling less of protests or disputes and more of small-scale insurrections involving a few thousand people successfully staring down at least local and regional governments. The government seems less willing to use excessive force than they were a decade or two ago, where they would be as likely to deal with something like this with an armored battalion rather than a line of riot cops.

Kinda wondering where that'll be headed in the next decade or so..
