CBS 2 Exclusive: Hastert Leaving Congress
Source: CBS2 Chicago

Former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert is in Asia, but he's scheduled a news conference in Kendall County for Friday.

CBS 2 Political Editor Mike Flannery reports exclusively sources say that they expect Hastert to announce he will not seek re-election next year.

In personal terms, it's been a big year for him and wife, Jean. Denny Hastert turned 65, and the couple just welcomed their first grandchild, Jack Hastert, to the family. He also had to surrender the speaker's gavel to a Democrat.

While sources tell CBS 2 that he’s leaving Congress after 22 years, he’s ridiculed previous speculation along those lines.

Edited on Tue Aug-14-07 02:39 PM by Lobster Martini
Every time his predecessor as Speaker of the House, Newt, started to speak, I knew before his lips parted that I would disagree with every word. But Newt was the angry dog that you are glad to see on a leash, whereas Hastert was the fly about to hit your light bulb. The only way anyone will know he's missing is that the light bulb will be dark and his sandwich will still be there, undisturbed by flies.

39. I went to your (Lee County Democrats) picnic out in Walton
yesterday. It was great fun, as always. I enjoy the Democrats in your county.

Laesch was there, working hard, and getting his petition signed. There were some local and state candidates present, but Laesch was the only one of the Congressional candidates who showed up there. He has recently married, to a union carpenter. She is a pretty lady, and she is an asset to his candidacy, working just as hard as he is.

He came over and sat with some of us Democrats from the 16th District. We talked about campaign finance. He didn't have to spend any time with us. Although we are mostly officers in our county, we don't vote for him, and can't sign his petition.

The Democrats in your district are not united behind anyone yet because it would not be the right thing to do. Officially, most organizations do not endorse a candidate until after the primary.

I know that there have been quite a few Democratic organizations around the state who have endorsed Obama for President. Quite frankly, some of them have felt pressured to do so by the Obama campaign. I have mixed feelings about that. Illinois' Democrats want to present a united front behind a favorite son. But people should still feel free to vote the way they want in a primary. I tell people that I have not chosen a candidate yet. And it is the truth.

I like Laesch. But remember, I don't vote for him, so I have no stake in his candidacy. I think he has the name recognition to win the primary.

Wait until after the primary. Whether it is Laesch or one of the others, Illinois Republicans are such a demoralized mess that they could lose this seat. If they are smart, they will freeze the Milk Nazi along with some of his dairy products and keep him out of the race. I hope, true to their past performance, they are not smart.

NUMBER ONE position in the House of Representatives to one of the rank-n-file, sitting all the way in the back of the main floor. I guess only one two-year stretch is about all he can take, watching his old job being taken by a girl. Even worse, a girl from San Francisco. That's gotta hurt. Perhaps it's too much to stomach, even for a stomach the size of his.

To which I say - "GOOD." Sit on it and swivel, hastert. Good riddance. Another bloated, anemic republi-CONMAN headin' for the door.
