MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA, Mass. --A Hood blimp that regularly flies above Fenway Park crashed into a wooded area Tuesday when the pilot lost rudder control shortly after takeoff and tried to make an emergency landing on a nearby beach, authorities said.

26. Hood
H.P. Hood & Co. is a dairy products firm in New England. The Hood logo is something of a local icon.

My grandfather worked at the big Hood plant in the Charlestown section of Boston for many years.

5. ROFLMAO!!!
For non-New Englanders, Hood is the name of a company that makes dairy products.

Seriously, I can never tell when Ian is fucking around anymore...

6. The Hood Blimp has crashed before

Also, I saw it flying eerily and alarmingly low across Boston once around 1991-93.

When the sound of a blimp's engines is the loudest sound you can hear in the middle of Boston, it's probably flying too low across Marlborough Street.

12. By John Frankenheimer, who gave us The Manchurian Candidate
Black Sunday (1977)

Terrorist organization Black September is planning an attack on the United States. A woman called Dahlia is the one overseeing the operation. She was in the Middle East with the other members of the organization, discussing the operation when some Israelis came in; the leader, Major Kobakov had his gun on her but didn't shoot her. Kobakov then informed the US what they found. Though they don't know what their operation is, Kobakov assures them that it will be devastating. So, with FBI man, Corley, they try to find out what it is before it's too late. But they both have different ways of doing things, and since Kobakov is the visitor, he is warned to watch it. Dahlia's "partner in crime" is Michael Lander, a Vietnam P.O.W., who is psychologically scarred by that experience, thus making him very susceptible to her machinations. Written by {rcs0411@yahoo.com}

A demented war veteran (Bruce Dern) plots to kill thousands of Americans at the Superbowl in Miami by using a specially designed dart-gun from the Goodyear blimp which flies above the stadium. However, a tough Middle Eastern anti-terrorist agent (Robert Shaw) has uncovered some of the plot and is out to stop him. Written by Jonathon Dabell {J.D.@pixie.ntu.ac.uk}

20. " kill thousands of Americans at the Superbowl in Miami by using a specially designed dart-gun..."
Does Homeland Security know about these specially designed dart-guns?

They might need to change the color of the crayons they're using or something...

21. Actually, I think the terror weapon was nerve gas!
It's been years since I saw the movie; but, I do remember they loaded the blimp's gondola with canisters of nerve gas.

24. Update: Low-Flying Blimp Alarms Residents. High Winds Force Craft To Hover Over Towns
POSTED: 6:07 am EDT August 14, 2007
UPDATED: 7:23 am EDT August 14, 2007

DANVERS, Mass. -- Boston's famous Hood blimp is often seen high above Fenway Park, but Monday night it had no ordinary flight.

The dirigible's trip ended up flooding local 911 operators with some very concerned calls.

Residents who were just finishing dinner reported that the blimp could be seen just above the tree line in Somerville, Medford and Saugus, and police dispatchers were swamped with emergency calls from frightened residents worried about how low the craft was flying. Some weren't even sure what it was.

State police contacted the Federal Aviation Administration, but the FAA knew nothing of the blimp's flight plan or the pilot's troubles.

Finally, the FAA was able to make contact with the blimp's pilot, who said high winds forced him to fly extremely low. He was finally able to land safely at Beverly Airport.
