Source: CBS

(CBS) ABERDEEN, Md. Baseball great and hall of famer Cal Ripken Jr. is making history again.

In a special ceremony in Washington on Monday, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will appoint Ripken as Special Sports Envoy to the U.S. Department of State.

The honor comes as hundreds of children around the world gather for the Cal Ripken World Series, reports CBS station WJZ-TV in Baltimore.

Ripken also founded the Cal Ripken Senior Foundation to promote baseball and softball among disadvantaged kids.

1. As a lifelong Orioles fan...

As a lifelong Orioles fan, I would have to say that he would be the only individually associated with this administration that I could ever respect.

I wouldn't read anything political into this on Cal's part, as Cal has never really ever taken on anything of a partisan nature.

Still, sad that the administration has to use genuine good guys like Cal to make itself look good. But oh well. Good for Cal. I guess.

3. I don't think so....
Cal's made it a point not to get politically involved, and that's fine with me. I believe in a strong seperation between sports and state. :)

If anything, Cal's more associated with Bill Clinton, who attended his record breaking 2,131st consecutive game (and was being interviewed on television when Cal went yard that game) in 1995, as well as his last career game in 2001.

I think there were a couple of folks in the Maryland GOP who wanted to recruit Cal to run for governor on the GOP ticket as a famous face a la Arnold or Reagan, but thankfully nothing ever came out of it, and Cal has not indicated wanting to get involved with any sort of partisian politics, Democratic or Republican. I don't know if his party affiliation has even been brought up. Which is fine with me. I like him for his baseball, not his politics.

It's a fluff position created by the administration for no particular reason other than to try to kiss up to a baseball legend, but I wouldn't read anything partisian into it.
