Seismologists confirm Utah mine collapse caused temblor
Source: physorg.com

A 3.9 magnitude temblor recorded at the time of a mine collapse in southern Utah on Monday, Aug. 6, was not from an earthquake, but more likely the result of the collapse itself, according to an analysis by University of California, Berkeley, seismologists.

1. Oh, but the mine operator insists it was the other way around
so who ya gonna believe? Someone with a vested interest or UC Berkely educated people?

8. BOSS, I keep wondering about the pro-Yucca Flats Nuclear proponents
We have a greedy mine owner saying the quake squashed his mine. On the other hand, how many bright minds can the nuclear lobby buy off to squelch questions about safe storage of spent fuel rods? That quake was not far from the Yucca Flats area.

Yes, I AM that cynical any more.

2. LOL isn't the union-hating mine owner trying to blame the collapse ON the earthquake
and not his greedy disregard for safe mine operation?

Oh, it's gonna be fun watching this pig roasted slowly on the spit.

4. I had to chuckle on an NPR report earlier in the week
A reporter was saying that his actions were really out of character for a mine operator who usually was very low key, contrite and humble after such calamities, that they'd rather play the Invisible Man.

6. Well to be Fair
It was reported that he did have a permit to perform the type of mining that has been suggested, and he got that permit from the powers that be, either at the state or federal level.

I'm not saying that he's not a greedy pig that shouldn't be roasted on a spit, but lets put all of those who were supposed to be watching out for the miners on that spit with him, and we can put Elaine Chao right along with them.

9. Oh, I am ALL for holding responsible feet to really hot fire.
I am sick and tired of 'officials' who sell out their constituents for a bit of coin. There are too many real PUBLIC SERVANTS out there who work to do a good job and end up being screwed at that task by ethics-challenged decision making policy setters who sell out to those they are suppose to regulate.

America has the worst government money can buy.

16. Not only is he blaming the collapse on an earthquake
but just like the Bushies, he learned to repeat the lie over and over - in his early on-camera interviews, he must have repeated "earthquake" more than a half dozen times in a one minute piece. If anyone out there has a link to one of those interviews, it would be great.

7. Is there a term for a minequake?
Because otherwise it's the same thing as an earthquake, though man-made.

21. Mine collapse.
Earthquakes are caused by tectonic movement of the Earth's crust.

A mine collapse is still called a mine collapse, not an earthquake.

13. Seismologists? Are they like those hucksters scientists? Hah, it is a hoax, just like global
warming.

It is a massive conspiracy to go after the god-fearing, all American Mine Owners.

Seismologists, phhhht!

14. I thought the news reported aftershocks?
I saw something saying they had stopped the rescue efforts for a time because of aftershocks? Or was that just normal media B.S.?

17. I believe Murray was feeding the media what he wanted them to
believe to fit his agenda. It appeared it was in charge of everything, but yet wouldn't meet with the families of the missing miners.

15. I hope all the family's of those miners...
sue this guy for wrongful death (if they are dead, and I'm hoping they aren't), and end up taking everything he has. Put his ass out on the street.

18. California seismologists are quacks
Dr. Bob Murray, Ph.D. says it was the earthquake that caused his mine to tremble, and the sun goes around the earth.

19. This is irrefutable
The quake's focus was something like 1 or 2 km deep. There is a concept in seismology called a "seismic lid" which essentially says that in the upper 5 km or so of the crust the lithostatic pressure is too low to allow for seismic earthquakes to happen.

The collapse absolutely caused the quake, not the other way around.
