Zee News/IndiaBeijing, Aug 10: China still faces significant food safety challenges, a health official said Friday, as Beijing announced it had banned 18 products ranging from fruit drinks to stewed chicken feet as they failed quality standards.
Facing international criticism following high-profile safety scandals on products ranging from toothpaste to tyres, Chinese authorities have launched an aggressive campaign of new regulations and crackdowns to assuage worries and protect its export industry.
"After many years of joint efforts, China has enhanced its food safety levels by a large margin. Food safety qualification rates are continuously increasing," Health Ministry spokesman Mao Qun'an said at a regular news conference.
"But there is still a big gap between the current food safety situation and the requirements of consumers."
Mao cited "severe challenges" to food safety including contamination from sources such as bacteria, concerns brought about by new ingredients, fake food products, and illegal ingredients that can cause harm.
