26 U.S. Troops Killed In 1 Week In Iraq
Source: CBSNews

The U.S. military tells CBSNews.com that 26 American service members have been killed in action in Iraq in the past week alone, including three soldiers who were killed by a single roadside bomb attack reported Tuesday.

Most recently reported were the three Task Force Marne soldiers killed Saturday when a roadside bomb struck their convoy south of Baghdad, according to a brief statement that provided no more details.

One Multi-National Division - Baghdad soldier was killed and another wounded Monday when their vehicle was targeted by an armor-piercing explosively formed penetrator, or EFP, in a western section of the capital, the military said separately.

Lt. Col. Rudy Burwell, a military spokesman based at Camp Victory in Baghdad, told CBSNews.com that a total of six troops were killed in action Monday.

4. Lies! July was the best month ever!
We turned a corner in July thanks to General Petraeus. There were fewer troop deaths, and liberals were finally admitting bush was right and saying "we just might win" ... July will be remembered as the month we saw a majour shift in Iraq, leading us to VICTORY!!!!!!!!

(sarcasm, obviously ... and I feel horrible for the families of the soldiers that lost their lives last week)

All Things Considered, August 6, 2007 · The U.S. military says it believes that the Shia-led government in Baghdad is trying to cleanse the city of all Sunnis.

Sectarian violence has pushed most Sunnis into west Baghdad, and the Iraqi government is suspected of limiting basic services to the Sunnis in hopes of causing them to leave.

That would leave Sunnis even further unrepresented in the city, and it has cast a whole different light on the delay of provincial elections.

A government official claims, however, that Sunni politicians, fearful of losing to other Sunnis in the elections, are to blame.

Roadside Bombs Kill 4 US Troops in Iraq

BAGHDAD Aug 7, 2007 (AP)

Roadside bombs killed four U.S. soldiers in the Baghdad area,
including three in a single strike, the military said Tuesday.

Three Task Force Marne soldiers were killed Saturday when a
roadside bomb struck their convoy south of Baghdad, according
to a brief statement that provided no more details.

One Multi-National Division Baghdad soldier was killed and
another wounded Monday when their vehicle was targeted by an
armor-piercing explosively formed penetrator, or EFP, in a
western section of the capital, the military said separately.

The U.S. military has accused Iran of supplying Shiite extremists
with EFPs to step up attacks against American forces. Tehran
denies the allegations.

The deaths raised to at least 3,678 members of the U.S. military
have died since the Iraq war started in March 2003, according
to an Associated Press count.

The vice president spoke at the 84th National Convention of the Marine Corps League in Albuquerque.

...

Cheney says now is not the time to lose heart and withdraw from Iraq, as some members of Congress have demanded.

He says that to quit the fight would be to lose, and that the consequences would be grievous.

A group of about 15 protesters demonstrated outside the hotel where the vice president spoke.

Iraq power system 'near collapse'

Baghdad's power supply crashed completely for a day last week
Iraq's national power grid is on the brink of collapse, the country's electricity ministry has warned.
Water supplies to Baghdad have also been cut off for days at a time, with summertime pressures on key systems said to be more intense than ever.

The ministry blamed poor maintenance, fuel shortages, sabotage by insurgents and rising demand for the problems, and said some provinces hold onto supplies.

The US Army told the BBC that Iraq must now take charge of fixing the problems.

The general in charge of helping Iraq rebuild its infrastructure, Michael Walsh, said that although Iraqi authorities only have one-quarter of the money needed for reconstruction, solving the problem was now up to them.

A surge of phony spin on Iraq
Bush's backers are peddling a sunny view of the president's strategy -- despite Iraq's political chaos and soaring death counts.

By Juan Cole

Aug. 07, 2007 | As Congress prepared to go on its August recess, Pentagon officials and White House backers were desperately spinning as a success this year's escalation of U.S. troop levels in Iraq. A recent poll shows that there has been a 10 percent uptick in the proportion of Americans who think the so-called surge, first announced by President George W. Bush in January, is having a beneficial effect. But how accurate are the sunny pronouncements coming out of Washington? What would constitute a success for the surge, and how likely is it to be achieved?

The troop escalation was intended to calm down Baghdad and to give the government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki breathing room to pursue a political reconciliation, especially with the Sunni Arab population. But the political goals of the surge are simply not being accomplished -- and indeed, the political situation has deteriorated substantially.

<...>

And what of the supposed "good news" on the military side of the equation? Before July ended, a spate of wire service and newspaper reports began appearing, saying that only 74 U.S. troops had been killed by Iraqi guerrillas that month, the lowest total since November and a sign that the surge was working. But the reporters and editors who gave U.S. headlines such as "U.S. Death Toll in Iraq in July Expected to Be Lowest in '07" (New York Times) were being assiduously spun. Bush officials were undoubtedly pushing the information that produced these headlines in an attempt to give Republicans in Congress some good news to take back to their constituents during the August recess.

<...>

Meanwhile, the statistics for the hapless Iraqis themselves are no less encouraging. According to icasualties.org, the Iraqi civilian and military death toll from political violence in July 2007 was 1,690, a 25 percent increase from the July 2006 number, 1,280. (There was also a 25 percent increase in Iraqi casualties in July 2007 over June 2007, meaning the trend was going in the wrong direction any way you look at it.) These statistics -- bad enough as they are -- are typically understated by a substantial margin because passive tallying by media outlets misses many deaths.

<...>

Surely if the troop escalation has been working, then the number of guerrilla attacks must be declining, right? But as recently as June, according to a report by Reuters, daily attacks by guerrillas that month hit an astounding all-time high of 177.8 per day on average. That is, not since May 1, 2003, have there been as many attacks per day as in June 2007, with a total of 5,334. May's total number of attacks was similar, and year to year, the number of attacks in June was 46 percent greater than in June 2006. About 18 percent of the operations in June targeted civilians, and a slightly higher percentage were aimed at Iraqi security forces. The remainder, more than 60 percent, were aimed at U.S. troops (guerrillas launched 3,671 attacks on U.S. troops in June alone, up 7 percent from May).

As British Leave, Basra Deteriorates
Violence Rises in Shiite City Once Called a Success Story

By Karen DeYoung and Thomas E. Ricks
Washington Post Staff Writers
Tuesday, August 7, 2007; Page A01

As British forces pull back from Basra in southern Iraq, Shiite militias there have escalated a violent battle against each other for political supremacy and control over oil resources, deepening concerns among some U.S. officials in Baghdad that elements of Iraq's Shiite-dominated national government will turn on one another once U.S. troops begin to draw down.

Three major Shiite political groups are locked in a bloody conflict that has left the city in the hands of militias and criminal gangs, whose control extends to municipal offices and neighborhood streets. The city is plagued by "the systematic misuse of official institutions, political assassinations, tribal vendettas, neighborhood vigilantism and enforcement of social mores, together with the rise of criminal mafias that increasingly intermingle with political actors," a recent report by the International Crisis Group said.

After Saddam Hussein was overthrown in April 2003, British forces took control of the region, and the cosmopolitan port city of Basra thrived with trade, arts and universities. As recently as February, Vice President Cheney hailed Basra as a part of Iraq "where things are going pretty well."

But "it's hard now to paint Basra as a success story," said a senior U.S. official in Baghdad with long experience in the south. Instead, it has become a different model, one that U.S. officials with experience in the region are concerned will be replicated throughout the Iraqi Shiite homeland from Baghdad to the Persian Gulf. A recent series of war games commissioned by the Pentagon also warned of civil war among Shiites after a reduction in U.S. forces.

For the past four years, the administration's narrative of the Iraq war has centered on al-Qaeda, Iran and the sectarian violence they have promoted. But in the homogenous south -- where there are virtually no U.S. troops or al-Qaeda fighters, few Sunnis, and by most accounts limited influence by Iran -- Shiite militias fight one another as well as British troops. A British strategy launched last fall to reclaim Basra neighborhoods from violent actors -- similar to the current U.S. strategy in Baghdad -- brought no lasting success.

"The British have basically been defeated in the south," a senior U.S. intelligence official said recently in Baghdad. They are abandoning their former headquarters at Basra Palace, where a recent official visitor from London described them as "surrounded like cowboys and Indians" by militia fighters. An airport base outside the city, where a regional U.S. Embassy office and Britain's remaining 5,500 troops are barricaded behind building-high sandbags, has been attacked with mortars or rockets nearly 600 times over the past four months.

12. Our media acts like the war is over. The surge worked. All we have to do now is wait
for the victory parades and flowers and, of course, the oil. I was not aware that so many of our soldiers had died over there. 26? In one week? That's not what they told us. They didn't tell us much about the horrible conditions for the people in Baghdad, either. Well let's just wait for Gen. I Don't Know Who Has Our Weapons to tell us to stay the course. He has so much more cred than the vacationing Commander Guy.

Pentagon: Level of troops in Iraq peaks

WASHINGTON - The number of U.S. troops in Iraq has temporarily peaked at its highest level ever as new units arrive to replace those packing up and leaving, the Pentagon said Tuesday.

The size of the force is nearly 162,000, slightly surpassing the 161,000 troop level for the Iraqi elections in 2005, said Defense Department spokesman Bryan Whitman.

There is always a temporary bulge in the number of troops when one unit is leaving and handing off to its replacement unit.

The number of troops had been at about 155,000 to 159,000 for some time because of the escalation ordered by President Bush in January.

"There is no change to the level of effort and the combat power that we are projecting into Iraq," Whitman said. He noted that the force will remain at the 20 combat brigades and their support units sent in the escalation aimed at calming violence in Baghdad........

USA TODAY's Susan Page reports that President Bush is making some headway in arguing that the increase in U.S. troops in Iraq is showing military progress.

In the latest USA TODAY/Gallup Poll, taken Friday through Sunday, the proportion of those who said the additional troops are "making the situation better" rose to 31% from 22% a month ago. Those who said it was "not making much difference" dropped to 41% from 51%.

About the same number said it was making things worse: 24% now, 25% a month ago.

The number of those who favor removing virtually all U.S. troops from Iraq by next April 1 has dropped a bit, though two-thirds of those surveyed still support the idea.

In the July survey, a record high of 62% had called the invasion of Iraq "a mistake." That view is now held by 57%, roughly where it's been for more than a year.

Outrage after 91 Iraqi interpreters abandoned

Michael Evans, Defence Editor of The Times

Outraged reaction erupted from serving military officers, retired generals and politicians today after the revelation in The Times that nearly 100 Iraqi interpreters who have risked their lives working for the British in Basra may be abandoned to their fate when the troops are withdrawn.

One Territorial Army officer who served in Basra in 2003/2004 told The Times that his interpreter was visited by militia who held a gun to the head of his wife and children.

They threatened to kill him and his family if he did not leave the country in three days.

“Yet when I took up his case with the Home Office, he was immediately turned down for refugee status,” Major Andrew Alderson of the TA’s Queen’s Own Yeomanry said.

In Iraqi south, Shiites press for autonomy

By Sam Dagher Mon Aug 6, 4:00 AM ET

BAGHDAD - When Najaf unplugged its power station from the national grid last week, it was a sign of provincial dissent over the unequal distribution of electricity. But it also indicates a new assertiveness in the south, as Iraq's regional leaders seek to wrest control from a central government in Baghdad paralyzed by political infighting.
!

Multiple visions for unifying the county's southern provinces are emerging. The Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council (SIIC), one of the most powerful Shiite parties, is leading the charge to form an autonomous "South of Baghdad Region."

But 45 southern tribal notables in Najaf last week signed their own pact that envisions creating "the self-rule government of the unified Iraqi south."

Regardless of which southern group wins out, Baghdad faces a formidable challenge that could mean not just the loss of electricity, but revenue from the region's ports and oil fields, and further fracturing along sectarian lines.

BAGHDAD, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's government plunged deeper into crisis on Monday when ministers loyal to Iraq's first post-war leader Iyad Allawi said they would boycott future cabinet meetings.

The move follows the pull-out last week of the Accordance Front, the biggest Sunni Arab bloc in the national unity government, in protest at Maliki's refusal to address a list of demands, including a greater say in security matters.

"We are still in the government but we are boycotting cabinet meetings. We sent a list of demands to Prime Minister Maliki four months ago but he did not respond to it," said Human Rights Minister Wijdan Michael.

IRAQ: Militiants using water to extort "favours" from displaced

BAGHDAD, 7 August 2007 (IRIN) - Many internally displaced persons (IDPs) in camps in Iraq are facing shortages of water, especially clean drinking water, and the situation is being exploited by unscrupulous militants, local non-governmental organisations (NGOs) say.

Some displaced families have said militants have been delivering clean water to their camps by truck and demanding money, goods or "favours" in return.

"They sometimes ask for money knowing we don't have any, and then start to search our tents to see if there is something useful, while armed men stay near the truck with their guns aimed at us," said Omar Lattif, 45, an IDP at Rahman camp on the outskirts of Missan in southern Iraq.

"Sometimes they even ask for fun with 'nice girls'," he said, adding that two men in the community had been killed for confronting militants demanding sex for water.

Bush levels dubious Iran nuclear arms charge
By AFP

WASHINGTON, Aug 6 (AFP) Aug 06, 2007

US President George W. Bush charged Monday that Iran has openly declared that it seeks nuclear weapons -- an inaccurate accusation at a time of sharp tensions between Washington and Tehran.
"It's up to Iran to prove to the world that they're a stabilizing force as opposed to a destabilizing force. After all, this is a government that has proclaimed its desire to build a nuclear weapon," he said during a joint press conference with Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

But Iran has repeatedly said that its nuclear program, which is widely believed in the West to be cover for an effort to develop atomic weapons, is for civilian purposes.

Asked to provide examples of Tehran openly declaring that it seeks atomic weapons, White House officials contacted by AFP said that Bush was referring to Iran's defiance of international calls to freeze sensitive nuclear work.

They explained that he was referring to Tehran's uranium enrichment -- a process that can yield nuclear bomb material -- and resulting worries by the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

"After keeping their nuclear program secret for a decade, the Iranian government has refused the offers of the international community to provide nuclear energy and continues to flout the inspectors of the IAEA," said national security spokesman Gordon Johndroe.

"Unfortunately, their intentions seem clear," Johndroe said.

we find a giant Satan encased in a huge ice cap (no warmth within him even though hell is full of burning fires), and he has bodies of people in his mouth that he is munching on, and arms and legs etc are strewn about him.

That's the image of Bush I see when we get these news reports back.

41. I pray and meditate for peace...
... for those serving in the Armed Forces, their families, spouses/partners, and friends.

It is always with a heavy heart that I read and pray over the fallen. It is so very tiring, to know that the President and Officials who sent these young men and women to their deaths has not even given them this same courtesy.

I am saddended that to our goverment these men and women were "just another 26 dead in Iraq".

Please pray and meditate for peace, and that our troops come home safe and whole.

43. Iran-Supplied Bomb Is Killing More Troops in Iraq, U.S. Says
the mullahs prayers for success in Iraq may be stronger

Iran-Supplied Bomb Is Killing More Troops in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Aug. 7 — Attacks on American-led forces using a lethal type of roadside bomb said to be supplied by Iran reached a new high in July, according to the American military.

The devices, known as explosively formed penetrators, were used to carry out 99 attacks last month and accounted for a third of the combat deaths suffered by the American-led forces, according to American military officials.

Though explosively formed penetrators account for a small fraction of roadside bomb attacks in Iraq, they cause a disproportionately large number of casualties.

Of the 69 members of the American-led forces killed in action in July, the lowest toll in months, 23 died as a result of attacks with the devices, according to data supplied by General Odierno’s command. Of the 614 allied troops who were wounded that month, 89 were hit in penetrator attacks.

Penetrator attacks have been a worry for years. In 2005, the United States sent a private diplomatic protest to Tehran complaining that its Revolutionary Guards and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah had been training Iraqi Shiite insurgents in Iran and providing them with bomb-making equipment.
