MEXICO CITY: Mexico and Brazil have signed an energy agreement that includes developing technology for oil and gas exploration and exploitation, Mexico's Energy Ministry said.
State oil companies Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, and Petroleo Brasileiro SA, or Petrobras, agreed to collaborate on studies for heavy crude production in deep water and production from other oil sources.
Pemex has drilled many deep water wells in recent years in the Gulf of Mexico, but production is seen as years away. The company wants to learn from Petrobras' expertise and experience in deep water, but
Mexico's constitution severely restricts foreign or private involvement in primary-sector oil activities. The countries also signed a broader memorandum of understanding on areas including refining, fuel supply, petrochemicals, liquefied natural gas, fuel quality and efficiency, renewable energy, bio-fuels and energy trade.
