Suicide Bomb Kills 25 in Northern Iraq

By KIM GAMEL Associated Press Writer
BAGHDAD Aug 6, 2007 (AP)

A suicide bomber slammed his truck into a densely populated
residential area in the northern Iraqi city of Tal Afar on
Monday, killing at least 25 people, police said. At least
22 others were wounded and an official said the death toll
was expected to rise.

The attack occurred in a crowded Shiite neighborhood of the
mixed city, which lies about 260 miles northwest of Baghdad.
The attacker drove a dump truck filled with explosives and
covered with a thin layer of construction materials, said
Brig. Gen. Rahim al-Jibouri, commander of Tal Afar police.

Blast rocks northern Iraqi town

At least 25 people have been killed by a suicide truck bomb
in the northern Iraqi town of Tal Afar, police say.

The blast hit a mainly Shia district of the mixed town and
injured at least 22 people, while further casualties are
feared to be trapped under rubble.

A curfew has been imposed on the whole of Tal Afar. The town
was once held up as a showcase for US-led efforts to pacify
Iraq.

But it has seen mounting bomb attacks and shootings this year.

MOSUL, Iraq (AFP) - Bomb attacks killed 36 Iraqis on Monday as a suicide bomber blew up a truck packed with explosives in a northern Shiite village and a booby trap killed nine people in a Baghdad minibus queue.

As thousands of US and Iraqi security forces focus on pushing insurgents out of Baghdad and other flashpoint cities under a five-month-old security plan, militants have increasingly resorted to attacks in villages and rural areas.

In the capital, a roadside bomb killed nine Iraqis, ripping through an unofficial stop for one of the battered minibuses used by thousands of people in the city, security and medical officials said.

The device, hidden on the side of the road, blew up after a minibus stopped to collect waiting passengers in the Diyala Bridge neighbourhood in the southern suburbs, security officials said. Shrapnel sprayed the area as Iraqis got on and off the minibus shortly before the main rush hour, and as others stood waiting for a different line.

4. Just another miscellaneous report for General Petraeus to ignore or forget.
Counts for nothing...the surge if working just fine. Just a bleep on the radar.

5. You mean Tal Afar the model city?
By Rod Nordland
Newsweek International

April 3, 2006 issue - At last, President Bush had news he could use from Iraq. He devoted an entire speech in Cleveland last week to the story of how the town of Tall Afar was wrested from Qaeda control and has become a model for defeating the enemy. Praise came not just from the administration; CBS's "60 Minutes" ran a glowing segment on what had been accomplished under Col. H. R. McMaster and his Third Armored Cavalry. McMaster, author of a celebrated book, "Dereliction of Duty," a critical look at how the U.S. military and its leaders got it wrong in Vietnam, made the rounds of the airwaves about how they're now getting it right in Iraq. Tall Afar, said the president, "is today a free city that gives reason for hope for a free Iraq."
