WASHINGTON (AP) -- Senate Democrats called for a special counsel to investigate whether Attorney General Alberto Gonzales lied under oath and subpoenaed top presidential aide Karl Rove Thursday in a widening probe into the dismissal of federal prosecutors.

"It has become apparent that the attorney general has provided at a minimum half-truths and misleading statements," four members of the Senate Judiciary Committee wrote in a letter to Solicitor General Paul Clement.

They dispatched the letter shortly before Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., announced the subpoena of Rove, the president's top political strategist.

"We have now reached a point where the accumulated evidence shows that political considerations factored into the unprecedented firing of at least nine United States Attorneys last year," said Leahy, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Legal career

Following graduation, Clement clerked for Judge Laurence H. Silberman of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, and for Associate Justice Antonin Scalia of the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Clement also served from 1998 to 2004 as an Adjunct Professor at the Georgetown University Law Center, where he taught a seminar on the separation of powers.

Clement joined the United States Department of Justice in February 2001. Before his confirmation as Solicitor General, he served as Acting Solicitor General for nearly a year and as Principal Deputy Solicitor General. He has argued over 25 cases before the United States Supreme Court, including McConnell v. FEC, Tennessee v. Lane, Rumsfeld v. Padilla, United States v. Booker, Hamdi v. Rumsfeld, Rumsfeld v. FAIR, Hamdan v. Rumsfeld, Gonzales v. Raich, Gonzales v. Oregon and Hein v. Freedom From Religion Foundation. 28. Keith has this as the top story for tonight's show:
------------------------------------------------------
Countdown Tonight!
------------------------------------------------------

Senate Democrats called for a special counsel to investigate whether Attorney General Alberto Gonzales lied under oath and subpoenaed top presidential aide Karl Rove Thursday in a widening probe into the dismissal of federal prosecutors. We have now reached a point where the accumulated evidence shows that political considerations factored into the unprecedented firing of at least nine United States Attorneys last year," said Leahy, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Administration officials have consistently denied any wrongdoing in connection with the firing of the prosecutors, who were let go last winter. Gonzales is at the center of the U.S. attorney controversy, but the call for a perjury probe involved alleged conflicts between testimony he gave the Judiciary Committee last year and this week. The issue revolves around whether there was internal administration dissent over the president's warrantless wiretapping program. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19975387/

As if lying to Congress, politicizing the Justice department, spying on American citizens and generally shitting on the Constitution is neither important or out of control. Gotta hand it to them, they do have balls.

74. Not Holding My Breath...
EP will be claimed for Karl and the gang... that fight (If our Leaders even fight it) will take 6 months at minimum...If the SCOTUS sides with the founders and check mates the Administration then we will have the Congressional testimony which then may or may not lead to an investigation which will get Rove or other crony on perjury or obstruction or if they tell the truth will launch an investigation into the administrations disregard for the rule of law.... OK that said it takes another 6 months... at that point we have a POTUS Elect and Impeachment is moot....

In Other Words this is too little too late to make a real difference.

The Evidence Points To Rove
Submitted by Bill Scher on July 26, 2007 - 3:39pm.

A long-standing Weekend Watchdog question is why Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., hadn't exercised his authority to issue a subpoena to Karl Rove and other White House officials and their role in the Prosecutor Purge.

Since then, several staffers have been subpoenaed. But today, Leahy finally subpoenaed Rove and his deputy.

Why has it taken this long? Leahy's speech on the Senate floor indicates his team was patiently collecting evidence to justify taking this step:

We have now reached a point where the accumulated evidence shows that political considerations factored into the unprecedented firing of at least nine United States Attorneys last year.

Testimony and documents show that the list was compiled based on input from the highest political ranks in the White House, including Mr. Rove and Mr. Jennings.

The evidence shows that senior officials were apparently focused on the political impact of federal prosecutions and whether federal prosecutors were doing enough to bring partisan voter fraud and corruption cases.

It is obvious that the reasons given for these firings were contrived as part of a cover up and that the stonewalling by the White House is part and parcel of that same effort.

The Carpetbagger Report praises Leahy's deliberative handling of the matter:

Good for Leahy. The point has always been to follow the facts. The first step was getting testimony from Justice Department officials, who implicated White House officials. So, the next was to speak to White House aides like Sara Taylor and Harriet Miers. Step Three, naturally, is getting information from Karl Rove and his deputy, J. Scott Jennings.

Obviously, if the White House refuses to cooperate when it comes to Miers, the Bush gang certainly won’t cooperate in making Rove and Jennings available, but that’s not how Leahy is looking at this. He’s conducting an investigation, a crime may have been committed, and they have pertinent information. They won’t appear voluntarily, so they’re getting subpoenas.

And if they don’t show, they can be subject to contempt charges, too.

Hard to argue with the professional approach being taken. ......(more)

71. can somebody please explain the process.....
...that will happen from here. As in what steps can rove take to dodge going before congress, and what can congress do to force his appearance? Can rove actually go to jail if he refuses to go before congress?

72. joke
this will accomplish fucking nothing.

Rove must be laughing hard right now.

Democrats haven't been able to do ANYTHING to stop Bush and nothing will change. We'll stay in Iraq and Bush and Cheney will remain in power. Case closed.

If they had REAL balls, they would introduce articles of impeachment. But balls and Democrats are two words that don't go together.
