MPs criticise U.S. over prisoner rendition
Wed Jul 25, 2007 3:21PM BST

LONDON (Reuters) - A parliamentary committee criticised the
United States on Wednesday for its "lack of regard for UK
concerns" about the transfer to Guantanamo Bay of two British
residents.

"In fighting international terrorism it is clear that the U.S. will
take whatever action it deems is necessary, within U.S. law, to
protect its national security," the Intelligence and Security
Committee said.

Looking into possible British involvement in the controversial
U.S. programme of "rendition" of prisoners to foreign jails where
they may be tortured, it said there was no evidence of any
British agency being directly involved.

But it said the security service was "indirectly and inadvertently"
involved in one case of rendition of two British residents,
arrested in Gambia in 2002.

US 'ignored' UK rendition protest

British concerns appear to have had no "material affect" on US
actions in its "war on terror", the UK's intelligence and
security committee has said.

The committee, which reports to the prime minister, was probing
possible UK involvement in rendition flights.

But Britain's security services had "inadvertently" helped in one
case after the US ignored caveats placed on supplied information.

'Fundamental liberty'

It said ministerial approval should be required in future in such
cases and a complete ban placed on approvals for renditions which
could lead to suspects being held in secret prisons.
