Former Guantanamo inmate blows himself up in Pakistan

by Rana Jawad

ISLAMABAD (AFP) - A former Guantanamo Bay prisoner wanted
for the 2004 kidnapping of two Chinese engineers in Pakistan
blew himself up with a grenade during a clash with security
forces on Tuesday, officials said.

One-legged Taliban militant Abdullah Mehsud killed himself to
avoid capture after troops raided his hideout, interior ministry
spokesman Brigadier Javed Cheema told AFP.

The Islamic rebel's death comes amid intensifying US pressure
on President Pervez Musharraf to take military action against
Al-Qaeda and Taliban safe havens in tribal areas along the
border with Afghanistan.

"Abdullah Mehsud blew himself up with a grenade and died
when security forces raided his hideout. Three of his
accomplices were arrested," Cheema said.

as in charged, tried, convicted, sentenced, punished and, finally, released?

Didn't know they did that at Gitmo.

on a battlefield, no........

Don't misunderstand, I'm not supporting what I wrote, I'm just telling you how the military views it.........13 years now I have been taught if they aren't in uniform then they are not afforded the same protection as someone that is wearing one........

31. What a "Uniform"???? A uniform can be a black ban on your arm.
The term Uniform is NOT defined in the Convention, thus what is a "Uniform"? can be a factor, and most commentators interpreted that to include people in other civilian dress who have taken up arms to defend themselves or their country.

32. That's insane. There is less doubt as to whether someone was participating...
in hostilities if they have a uniform, a rank, some sort of serial number, some type of insignia.

On the other hand, someone who isn't wearing a uniform/etc. isn't clearly identified and it is possible they did not take part in the hostilities. There is doubt.

This isn't that complicated, it's all common sense, and it would seem on some level an insane idea to treat someone whose identity and participation in hostilities is in doubt even worse than a soldier.

It would appear that type of mentality does not stem from a wish to do the right thing, but merely to find an excuse to treat someone without basic human rights.

10. The "not wearing a uniform" lies are what the Neonazicons have spread about Geneva.
Just as they fabricated an entirely new category -- the "unlawful combatant" -- in order to commit war crimes and violate the treaty.

Have to call that shit out as soon as we see it here.

11. Well friend
they have been training the military that people not in uniform do not deserve the same niceities since I was a young private in 1994...........Well before Bushco...........All I'm saying is that the military believes those not in uniform are not affored all the protections people in uniforms are...........And I have been trained that way for 13 years..............That has nothing to do with Neocons, that's just the reality I live in.......

18. Once that person is captured, you have two choices:
Either: (1) that person is a prisoner of war and entitled to protections under the Geneva Conventions; or (2) that person is a civilian and must be charged with a crime and provided due process.

Both of these options require that the person be dealt with under law.

The Neonazicons have tried to avoid this by fabricating a third category and a black hole in the law so that they could violate the law with impunity. For doing this, the Neonazicons themselves should be prosecuted.

7. Well, if he wasn't angry at the world BEFORE his time in Gitmo
you can bet that he was AFTERWARD.

It's like sending young non-violent first offenders to adult prison. They come out angry, poorly equipped for real life, and their heads full of schemes that the professional cons taught them.

13. "did his time"...which court convicted him?
..He may have been a bad guy before, but torturing him sure seemed to sharpen his hatred, no?

Why was he released if he was a bad guy?

The only ones I've heard being released were subsequently found not to have done anything but had brown skin at the wrong time..

16. Exactly what "time" might you be referring to?
Edited on Tue Jul-24-07 02:52 PM by dicksteele
The word "time", used in the phrase "did his time", generally
means a PRISON SENTENCE delivered to someone who has been
convicted of a crime.

You know, "convicted". As in "found guilty".
At a trial.
Held by a court.

I hardly think that the phrase "did his time" properly applies
to someone who was kidnapped and tortured for two years by a
foreign government.

Not even close.

22. He was tortured and abused at Gitmo, then released for lack of evidence
The British and foreign press have documented hundred of cases in which people were detained, taken to Gitmo, tortured and abused, and released years later.

Gitmo has its own version of PTSD.

21. how about those Chines citizens in Pakistan he tortured?
do the timeline math;

<snip>
An Islamic militant leader, wanted for kidnapping two Chinese engineers in Pakistan in 2004, has blown himself up to avoid arrest, Pakistani police say.
<snip>
He lost a leg in a landmine explosion as the Taleban fought to take over the Afghan capital Kabul in 1996, and was eventually captured and handed over to the Americans in 2001.

Released from Guantanamo in 2004, he quickly resumed his militant role and was involved in the kidnap of two Chinese workers, one of whom died during a rescue bid by Pakistani forces in South Waziristan later that year.

or maybe they can pick up where they left off and kill more "Godless" Chinese

We got no one to blame but ourselves for the blowback of the systematic torture and abuse at Gitmo.

BTW, fucken US Navy should leave Gitmo and return it to Cuba, from which it was stolen!

I'd bet that Gitmo could convince quite a few people that it might pay to be hung for sheep as opposed to lambs. No surprise here--our prison system is a school for crime for exactly the same reasons.

By Abdul Hai Kakar

soldiers and did not commit suicide, one of the owners of the

The man, Shaikh Alam Mandokhel, said that Mehsud was shot in
the stomach.

Pakistani police had said Mehsud blew himself up to evade arrest
after being surrounded in Balochistan province.
