Connecticut Congressman Advises People to Avoid Times Square Celebration;
The Associated Press
Published: Dec 31, 2003

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Concerned about terrorism, Rep. Christopher Shays urged revelers not to attend New Year's Eve celebrations like the one at Times Square this year. New York's mayor countered that Shays could use an infusion of courage.
A member of the House Select Committee on Homeland Security and chairman of a terrorism subcommittee, the Connecticut Republican told WVIT-TV on Tuesday that he wouldn't go to Times Square "for anything"

1. Chris Shays Will Be Sorry He Said That

cuz the businesspeople in NYC, the mayor and others will scream and yell. Watch for Chris' uh "clarification" of his earlier remarks.

Chris is the US Rep from Fairfield County, CT a bedroom community of NYC.

Truth be told - what he says is plain common sense.

Chris Shays Will Be Sorry He Said That

... unless he "knows" "something" that we do not. Sounds like he oughta be getting a visit from Tom Ridge's goons.

4. I would stay away just because its a pain in the butt!
I did it once the year of 9/11 and that was enough for me. Just my opinion. Some NYC folks I have talked to avoid Times Square like the plague on new years eve because they say it's mostly drunken tourists..

5. Good Grief

If Shays and others know something, and are not letting the public know -- then what are the folks in Times Square tonight - decoys?

That thought makes me sick. I admit though it is within the realm of possibility.

6. What an idiot!
This is a lose-lose situation no matter how you look at it.

If he's right then he will be criticized for not doing enough. If he's wrong then he joins the "Chicken Little" Club. And makes the rest of the Democrats look like idiots by association.

There is no way that hundreds of thousands of people are going to cancel their plans based on his say so.

7. Shays is a Republican
I know that can be hard to tell sometimes, as he is a decent congressman.

8. Hastert closed the House over anthrax, Daschle kept Senate open
in spite personal threats.
Also, Bloomberg is GOP too, did terrible during the blackout last summer (after HE got power, he said to the rest of us: "Who cares if it'll ve days or weeks?")
Fireworls in Times Square - not a good idea! (done over water for hundreds of years for obvious reasons)
