Red Cross demands access to Saddam
The international Red Cross has asked the US-led coalition in Iraq for access to captured former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein.

Under the Geneva Conventions the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has the right to contact any prisoner of war or detained civilian.

"We have been in contact with the Americans regularly concerning prisoners of war and other detainees in Iraq and in the course of this contact we have also talked about Saddam Hussein," ICRC spokesman Florian Westphal said.

"Saddam Hussein, as somebody protected by the Geneva Conventions, has a right to ICRC visits," he said.

1. Ah, I've been wondering what happened to their original plans
to visit Saddam. Rummy told the Red Cross they could, soon as they were done with the preliminary questioning.

I'd also like to know when his daughter will be allowed to see him.

2. I'm impressed
I didn't expect them to stand up for Saddam's rights under the Geneva convention. I have to re-evaluate my dislike of the Red Cross.

4. Some One Should Re-Evaluate ...
why we have rights. We have rights under the Geneva Conventions because people stand up for them against governments.

No one in positions of authority can be trusted to follow international laws and regulations. Only when they are held accountable are they expected to act correctly.

The International Red Cross is standing up for all people's rights.

5. Rumsfeld referred to "privileges" of the Geneva Convention

The regime does not consider them rights.
