Lampson raises twice as much funds as GOP rival

U.S. Rep. Nick Lampson has raised twice as much as his only official competitor for the congressional District 22 seat, according to campaign finance reports due Friday.
(snip)

Lampson, D-Stafford, will be up for re-election in 2008. His campaign said his contributions exceeded expectations, especially because Lampson spent half of the last quarter recovering from quadruple-bypass heart surgery.

"Nick has been a strong and independent voice for the people of TX-22," his campaign spokesman Steven Snodgrass said. "Given the campaign's solid progress and his bipartisan voting record, Congressman Lampson is in great shape for 2008."

Several Republicans are eyeing the district in hopes of reclaiming the seat vacated last year by former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay.

1. good news!
I remember that initially the conventional wisdom was that ths district was so conservative that Lampson was likely to serve only one term. This is a good indicator that this wisdom was wrong. Good for Rep. Lampson!

2. Actually, Lampson has voted as a conservative.
I'm glad he's there instead of Delay but he's on his own now for money unless we really need his vote. I don't give any more money to Liebercrats.

3. I hear that!
I mean, it was kinda sweet to see Lampson take over DeLay's district
only because Delay's stupid redistricting plan knocked Lampson out
of his home district, so his winning Delay's spot was like poetic justice.

However.. Lampson sold out his principles and Democratic values to
please his Delay constituents. To my mind, it's not worth it.

4. While I definitely hate to see Lampson
switch any of his votes to the other team, on the other hand, it is most unusual to see a representative actually voting the way the people he represents want him to -- I believe some of the things he's switched sides on were for that reason, to represent his district's wishes. So, while I wish he'd stick with us, I do wish more of our representatives would represent what we want.... because if that were the case, since the majority of the country wants it, we'd be having impeachment hearings, withdrawing from Iraq, fixing the outsourcing/free trade problem, etc etc etc, rather than many of our representatives doing whatever the hell THEY want.

6. I agree 100% with what you said.We can't expect any Democrat to vote lockstep
a representative who votes with his constituancy is DOING HIS JOB!this is the only way we are going to see more democrats in Texas...especially in areas like mine.

5. Oh, it is worth it.
This is a very heavily right-wing district. That there is a moderate conservative in there who's not loyal to the GOP is a victory, and about the best that can be expected right now.
