Oil tanker grounded off New York City

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A tanker carrying more than 19 million gallons of fuel oil grounded off New York City on Thursday but was not leaking, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The White Sea ran aground off New Jersey's Sandy Hook at approximately 6:30 a.m. EDT after losing steerage, said U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Bob Laura.

"It is a double-hulled vessel and the crew deployed some spill booms after it went aground," said Laura.

Tugs will attempt to free the vessel later on Thursday morning but some of the cargo may have to be removed before the ship can be refloated, he added.
