Cuban, U.S. Social Scientists Meet in Havana

AdvertisementHAVANA -- The 19th Conference for Cuban-U.S. Philosophers and Social Scientists opened Tuesday at the University of Havana.

The meeting, scheduled to run through Friday, drew together intellectuals and academics from the United States, Canada and Cuba to discuss public policy, the construction of a new state, neo-liberal globalization and the problems facing the so-called third world, as well as the analysis of socialism and the resistance to capitalism.

It will also cover tourism in Cuba,the influence of globalization, and the impact on social values caused by the avalanche of fashion, music and cultural products from the world's multinationals.

In the opening session, social scientists discussed the nation-state in capitalist countries and in Cuba, and the challenges confronting social projects in Venezuela, and other Latin American and Caribbean nations.
