NO Officer Charged in Beating Found Dead (Post Katrina Taped)
Source: ABC News

A former New Orleans police officer charged in the videotaped beating of a man after Hurricane Katrina has apparently shot himself to death, about a month before his trial was to begin, authorities said Monday.

The body of Lance Schilling, 30, was found Sunday in a Metairie home. An autopsy showed he died of a gunshot to the roof of the mouth, Jefferson Parish coroner's office said.

Schilling and another former officer were accused of beating Robert Davis, 64, a retired schoolteacher who had returned to New Orleans to check on his property several weeks after the storm.

An Associated Press Television News team recorded Davis being kneed and struck at least four times on the head by two police officers the night of Oct. 8, 2005.

1. He took the easy way out...rather than face the consequences of his actions...
which could have entailed going to jail. Coward. All the bullies are really cowards when it comes right down to it.

2. Yes, he did take the cowardly way out, like Hitler did.

4. True, which probably says more about our criminal justice system than about
asshole cops...

5. That's what I said re: the Japanese minister who did likewise recently.
Which was like a first for postwar Japan or something. I do feel it's taking the easy way out.

8. I am much more concerned about the man he beat up
Any news on the victim of Schilling's brutality? That is my real concern here.

9. Some problems solve themselves
Dirty cops are a huge problem, and our chief is taking a real, aggressive stance against it.

I thank the officer for taking his own life. It saves the man the pain of the trial and the public the cost of the trial and incarceration.

They will string up the other officer at trial.

10. ..
I'm sure his sentence wouldn't have been more than a yr. I don't see why he killed himself.

11. Wow, some harsh comments here...
Maybe the cop had some mental health issues. That could help explain why he beat the 64 year old fellow, and why he (only 30 years old) took his own life.

I don't condone police violence, ever... but a death sentence (so to speak) for a charge of assault & battery is a little heavy handed.

I believe that most people are fair and decent... so if it's all the same, I'm going to assume this cop was mentally unbalanced, or had some emotional problems.
