Snow: Bush standing firm behind Gonzales
Source: AP

WASHINGTON - The White House on Sunday dismissed Senate plans to hold a no-confidence vote on the attorney general and said the outcome will not undermine President Bush's resolve to keep Alberto Gonzales at the Justice Department.

"Not a bit. Purely symbolic vote," presidential spokesman Tony Snow said. He was asked in a broadcast interview whether Bush might reconsider his decision to support Gonzales should a sizable number of Republican senators vote for the no-confidence resolution.

"It is perfectly obvious that the president has the right to hire and fire people who serve at his pleasure," Snow said.

On Monday, the Senate planned to debate the one-sentence measure that declares Gonzales "no longer holds the confidence of the Senate and of the American people."

3. If Congress really wanted to get rid of Gonzales, they could impeach him. THEY WON'T
As far as the bush administration is concerned, the "Democratic" Congress is joke, and to some degree they are right

9. Backfire. Skip the vote. More investigations.
Why give GOP Senators a chance to "stand up to Bush" with a symbolic vote against Gonzales? I don't get that. As it stands, the GOP Senate crowd is presumed to approve of Gonzales because he is a Republican like them.

Let's save the no confidence vote for the American people in 2008.

Impeaching Gonzales or sending him to jail for his lies under oath. That is another matter.

If you take out Gonzales, you want to make sure there is maximum collateral damage to Bushism and its political party, the GOP. Ideally, you want a big pile of maimed GOP political careers and as many of them behind bars as we have prison space for. Gonzales and Card muscling Ashcroft in his sick bed at the behest of Bush (or so it appears) is a major opening. There's another shoe waiting to drop there. Goodling's testimony hurts Gonzales too.

Waiting a little is no problem, IMO. If the Dems think they have the goods, then they might not want to drop the political grenade until they can crowd a few more Republicans around Bush and Gonzales. Suits me. Taking out Gonzales would be kind of anti-climactic. I think he would have resigned already, except that I believe we are on record as saying a resignation would not halt the proceedings.
