EU official says CIA renditions were 'disaster' for anti-terror war

Jun 8, 2007

Paris - The secret kidnapping and torture of terrorist suspects by the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was a 'disaster' for the fight against terrorism, the European official investigating the use of European sites for the so-called renditions was quoted as saying Friday.

'The United States wanted to impose a war without rules against terrorism,' Dick Marty, a Swiss senator, who has been heading the Council of Europe investigation into the secret transfer of suspected terrorists, told the French daily Le Figaro. 'This policy ended in disaster.'

He went on to say that he and his investigators had 'proof... of the existence of extra-legal prisons in countries that worked closely with the United States, such as Poland.'

9. Council of Europe: Secret CIA Prisons Confirmed
(Here's another source. I posted this earlier today.)

By: Human Rights Watch
Published: Jun 8, 2007 at 07:58

The Central Intelligence Agency secretly operated illegal prisons for terrorism suspects in multiple locations in Poland and Romania from 2003 to 2005, according to a report released today by the Council of Europe, a European intergovernmental human rights body.

The result of an investigation initiated in November 2005 by the council's Parliamentary Assembly under the leadership of assembly member and Swiss senator Dick Marty, the report provides evidence confirming allegations first made by Human Rights Watch in 2005 (http://hrw.org/english/docs/2005/11/07/usint11995.htm ) that locations in Poland and Romania were among sites used by the CIA for secret detention.

It concludes that there is "now enough evidence to state that secret detention facilities run by the CIA did exist in Europe from 2003 to 2005, in particular in Poland and Romania." It also finds that prisoners in these facilities were subjected to "interrogation techniques tantamount to torture."

"Today's report confirms that Poland and Romania helped the CIA operate illegal detention sites on their territory in violation of international law," said Joanne Mariner, terrorism and counterterrorism director at Human Rights Watch. "It is now clear that US officials illegally conspired with intelligence officials in several European countries to ‘disappear,' interrogate and illegally transfer terrorism suspects, flouting basic human rights norms."

10. Yes -- their news reporting is actually pretty good, derived from global sources
They're Euro-based, and use the entertainment side of the website to drive traffic to it...

6. This needs big time Congressional Oversight
It needs looked into and publicly aired in the light of day. This secret stuff is allowing termites to erode the House of Liberty and Justice for All. Our Founding Fathers must be whirling in their graves. They need to haunt, George's ass, until he runs off to the Hague, for protection, from the Ghost of The Bill of Rights and the authors of the Constitution. In all of those Historic Buildings there has to be an Agitated Apparition. Booo, Boooo, Boooo, run away, George, run away, the spirits can see into your Sold Soul. They know, Lucifer, is your Higher Power, and they intend to drive you mad. You can't hide behind not having a Conscience, forever. You must realize all the blood of the innocents you have had tortured, tormented, abused, starved, dehydrated, unable to eliminate, poked, prodded, not allowed to sleep, having their auditory nerves, pummeled, until deaf, and then questioned, and questioned, and quesitoned,....there is no 5th amendment in interrogation. No Charges, no convictions, no knowing what you did, know knowing how long, enduring solitude, no end to the boredom, oh except for a beating now and then. George, maybe you are on your way to Alzheimer's' Dementia, and maybe your handlers want it that way. You'll know nothing and be responsible for nothing. Someone needs to take all of your money in fines, now, for crimes against humanity. Because you, sir have, none!

That's the truth they're afraid will be told, the double truth actually, that there was a torture program (which is easy to figure out since its reported) but also that it failed. I recall when the torture in Iraq came out, a panel of experienced interrogators discussed the revelations. They were befuddled that this would even be employed. The said you couldn't rely on information obtained that way. I never forgot that. Now it's back.
