Car bombs kill 15 in southern Iraq town

BASRA, Iraq (Reuters) - Two car bombs killed 15 people and wounded
32 in the southern Iraqi town of Qurna on Friday, hospital officials said.

Police said the blasts happened in quick succession. They said a bus
exploded in a bus terminal in one attack while in the other a car blew
up in a market.

Qurna is north of Basra, Iraq's second largest city. Car bombings are
not as common in the Shi'ite-dominated southern region as they are
elsewhere in Iraq.

3. Professors in Iraq to get bodyguards
Professors in Iraq to get bodyguards

KARBALA, Iraq (AFP) - Professors in Iraq's Shiite holy city of Karbala will be provided with bodyguards after receiving death threats, the university president said on Thursday, a day after two more teachers were gunned down in northern Baghdad.

"The governor of Karbala province has decided to allocate a bodyguard to each professor following murder threats," Mufid Jalil Awdh told journalists after a meeting with the governor.

He said the 350 students at the university, as well as the professors, would also be allowed to carry arms if they wished.

"The governor also ordered that the university be ringed by concrete barriers and that extra police be deployed in the area of the university and a residential complex for professors," Awdh said.

Academics, doctors, engineers and other professionals have been targeted by a bloody insurgency and by sectarian violence in the years since the 2003 overthrow of Saddam Hussein.

(Updates death toll)

KIRKUK, Iraq, June 8 (Reuters) - A car bomb exploded outside
a Shi'ite mosque in the northern Iraqi town of Dakok just after
Friday prayers, killing 10 people and wounding 10, police said.

A senior Kirkuk police official, Brigadier Sahat Qader, said the
mosque had been seriously damaged in the blast.

Dakok is about 30 km southwest of Kirkuk, a city disputed by
Arabs, ethnic Kurds and Turkmen. Settling its final status is
one of the most sensitive issues in Iraq.
