Car bomb kills 25 at Baghdad market

By RAVI NESSMAN, Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD - A parked car bomb ripped through a packed outdoor market
in southwestern Baghdad on Tuesday morning, killing 25 people and
injuring 60 others, despite a 3-month-old security crackdown meant
to reduce violence in the capital.

The deadly blast occurred about 10 a.m. in the Shiite-dominated
neighborhood of Amil, damaging a nearby medical center, turning
buildings into charred husks and setting a line of cars on fire,
police said.

The neighborhood has seen an increase in violence in recent weeks,
and Sunni politicians expressed fears that Shiite militiamen had
resumed their campaign of sectarian cleansing in Amil and nearby
neighborhoods of southwestern Baghdad.

1. Or, as they call it in Iraq..........
Tuesday. When does the full effect of "THE SURGE" kick in now? I was under the impression that we were already "surging" but from what I read it will be months until it's fully implemented. And then another few months.......and another few months after that.

Bush is counting on a miracle, or the end of his pResidency, as a benchmark for the success or failure of "THE SURGE". Success is pretty much out of the question, barring said miracle, so I guess the Bush "plan" is to keep this clusterfuck going until he can slough it off onto the next President. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! :eyes:

Baghdad market bomb kills 25, hurts 60

By ROBERT H. REID, Associated Press Writer
12 minutes ago

BAGHDAD - A car bomb exploded Tuesday at an outdoor market
in a Shiite area of Baghdad, killing 25 people and wounding at
least 60 — the deadliest in a string of attacks that stoked
sectarian tension in and around the capital.

-snip-

There were other signs Tuesday that Sunni-Shiite tensions are
again rising after they eased last winter following the start
of the Baghdad security operation Feb. 14.

At another fake checkpoint near Baqouba, 35 miles northeast
of Baghdad, gunmen killed six people from one family — a woman,
her 5-year-old son and four men — and stole their car, police
said. It was unclear whether the victims were Sunnis or Shiites.

-snip-

In all, at least 100 Iraqis were killed or found dead nationwide
Tuesday, according to police. They included 33 people found shot
execution-style — presumably by sectarian death squads — and
their bodies scattered across Baghdad.
