South Korea and European Union open free trade talks

Seoul - European Union Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson and South Korean Trade Minister Kim Hyun Chong announced Sunday in Seoul the official opening of talks on a comprehensive bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

Both sides expressed confidence that the liberalization of bilateral trade would contribute to the strengthening of the multilateral trade system.

Mandelson said he saw a bilateral agreement as a complement - not an alternative - to the Doha round of world trade negotiations.

The first round of talks between the EU and South Korean trade delegations to take place Monday through Friday in Seoul.

While in the US and Koreans protest an FTA, why does Korea and the EU start working towards it?
