27 slain in Baghdad car bombing

By RAVI NESSMAN, Associated Press Writer 30 minutes ago

BAGHDAD - A car bomb ripped through a wholesale food market in western Baghdad on Sunday, flattening cars and shops and killing at least 27 people in one of the deadliest attacks in the capital in recent days.

The attack came amid an 11-week-old crackdown by U.S.-led forces intended to bring stability to Baghdad.

The blast, which erupted about noon in the mixed Sunni-Shiite Baiyaa neighborhood, devastated the market, reducing cars and trucks to their charred skeletons and ripping the roofs and exteriors off of shops. In addition to the dead, dozens of others were injured.

BAGHDAD, May 6 (Reuters) - A car bomb killed at least 35 people
and wounded 80 on Sunday next to a crowded market in a Shi'ite
district of Baghdad which has been a repeated target of attacks
blamed on Sunni Islamist al Qaeda.

U.S. forces also killed up to 10 militants and destroyed a torture
room in Baghdad's Sadr City, a bastion of the Mehdi Army militia
of anti-American Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.

U.S. officials said the predawn raid -- targeting suspected
members of a cell known for smuggling sophisticated bombs from
Iran -- found 150 mortar shells in the same building as the
torture room and destroyed them in a controlled detonation.

The car bomb exploded next to a crowded market in the Bayaa
district. Markets are a favourite target of carbombers.

4. Another fine day in the 51st State.
Bush says if we stop wasting lives and billions of dollars there it might turn into "chaos."

I remember how republicans squealed about Clinton and his "nation building."

Funny how they change their minds so easily when their overlords tell them to do so.

5. General Petraeus's Surge Balance Scorecard is all green!
GI casualties up! Civilian casualties also up! Considering how the Bush regime measures success, I am sure that Petraeus will soon be in line to get the Medal of Freedom, and join icons such as George Tenet, Paul Bremer, and Tommy Franks.

6. Remember, people killed by bombs don't count
If you counted them, you'd be giving in to the terrorists.

U.S. officials exclude car bombs in touting drop in Iraq violence

U.S. officials who say there has been a dramatic drop in sectarian violence in Iraq since President Bush began sending more American troops into Baghdad aren't counting one of the main killers of Iraqi civilians.

Car bombs and other explosive devices have killed thousands of Iraqis in the past three years, but the administration doesn't include them in the casualty counts it has been citing as evidence that the surge of additional U.S. forces is beginning to defuse tensions between Shiite and Sunni Muslims.

President Bush explained why in a television interview on Tuesday. "If the standard of success is no car bombings or suicide bombings, we have just handed those who commit suicide bombings a huge victory," he told TV interviewer Charlie Rose.

It's not how many die that counts, it's how you count the dead. :(
