Lawmakers reject US pressurePublished: Sunday, 6 May, 2007, 08:18 AM Doha Time

BAGHDAD: Iraqi lawmakers said yesterday that they might yet cut short their planned summer recess in order to pass key laws, but warned the US not to push them to do so.

Some members of parliament said privately that pressure from Washington might even persuade some anti-American parties to insist on taking the two-month break as planned, as a gesture of defiance.

“This is unnecessary interference,” said Kurdish legislator Mahmud Othman. “Parliament has a sense of responsibility. If they find there is a need to legislate laws urgently they will not go on leave.
“This American interference is strange and could have negative results.”

Some US politicians have angrily insisted that the Iraqi parliament cancel a recess due in August and September in order to have more time to pass bills designed to aid war-torn Iraq’s quest for national reconciliation.
The Iraqi assembly is due to debate a law to rehabilitate former members of ousted dictator Saddam Hussain’s Baath Party and allow them to return to public life, and has a draft of a bill on sharing national oil revenues.

And there's no hope of Bush leaving Iraq until that bill is signed, because a share of the oil revenues is what he came for. Jim Hightower explains it all for you. And by the way, who is Bush to be telling people not to take long vacations?

3. Yeah, W says vacations are needed for those who "work hard"
Unless they are U.S. workers. If they wanted time off, they would be called lazy slugs.

But he and his appointed Iraqis? Yeah, they work had and need a few months off.

5. They risk working themselves to death just showing up to form a quorum
Maybe the AC is problem in keeping heads cool in the summer what with the power surges and all this year expected on the streets.

7. This is a classic example of passive-aggressive behavior wholesale.
The so-called Iraqi Parliament is resistant to benchmarks, timelines, in general even though the absence of such guarantees a longer American occupation of their country. (But OTOH, why should they risk their lives for their country when they have Americans willing to do the job for them?)

The two-month vacation that is non-negotiable demonstrates this attitude of "Don't rush us. We'll get to it."

8. Possible this has been staged by the Bushco's to get more time for the 'Surge' to play out??
Without the 'political solution' how can the military component be accurately measured??
