Republican hopefuls meet in 1st debate

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - Ten Republicans who often invoke Ronald Reagan hope the Gipper's magic rubs off as they face each other at the late president's library in the first GOP debate of the 2008 race. The setting and the state were fitting.

Republican top-tier contenders Rudy Giuliani, John McCain (news, bio, voting record) and Mitt Romney — as well as some of their underdog rivals — have embraced the conservative icon's legacy and called for their party to return to the limited-government that Reagan espoused in the 1980s, effectively distancing themselves from Bush.

Minutes before the debate began, the candidates each stood at a podium on stage in the shadow of Reagan's Air Force One, which was suspended from above in the library's Air Force One Pavilion. The 40th president's widow, Nancy Reagan, sat in the front row next to California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Eight months before the first GOP primary votes are cast, top issues such as the Iraq war, immigration, taxes, abortion, gay marriage and terrorism were certain topics during the debate at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library north of Los Angeles.

Republicans debate abortion

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. - Alone among 10 Republican presidential contenders,
Rudy Giuliani said in campaign debate Thursday night "it would be OK" if the
Supreme Court upholds a 1973 abortion rights ruling.

"It would be OK to repeal it. It would be OK also if a strict constructionist
viewed it as precedent," said the former New York city mayor, who has a
record of supporting abortion rights.

His nine rivals agreed that it would be a great day if the court overturns
the landmark ruling.

But Giuliani hedged when asked about his present position.

2. Five or so of them did not believe in evolution.
Then McCain would recruit John Chambers from Cisco for economic issues, the same John Chambers who said he wanted to make Cisco a China based company?

Holy shit!!
