New York pardons late Lenny Bruce
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/3345229.stm

23 December, 2003

American comedian Lenny Bruce has been granted a posthumous pardon by the state of New York 40 years after he was convicted in an obscenity case.

Bruce was charged after a performance in 1964 during which he was said to have used more than 100 obscene words.

He was convicted after a six-month trial. But he died of a drugs overdose in 1966 before serving any time.

State governor George Pataki said the pardon represented New York's commitment to freedom of speech.

Well at least something nice happened today.

it really pisses me off that I live in a country that treats its best artists like that - this country HATES artists - i guess you can say we're better off now than when Lenny - God bless him - got railroaded - though that's not saying much

oh well - here's to Lenny! :toast:

11. You are so right!
The propaganda is all about the swearing and they smeared him with the drugs...but, that was one dude who spoke truth to power!

He was great - let's all rent "Lenny" starring Dustin Hoffman in celebration of Bruce's pardon by (OMG) Pataki.

10. why do people need drugs?
why is there no advantage to pursuing art on it's own? Why has the pursuit of art gone down the tubes and there seems to be no more of the wild, free , pursuit of the same? Why has this happened? Why have people conformed to the expected in order to live. Why is not liberal arts taught anymore and why are courses such as the black and white courses, being taught in it's place--because that is what today "makes money" and that is indeed what determines who is the most "successful". I submit, that what we think of our lives and whether or not we thing we are successful , is not to be determined by what or how much money we can make and how much of a mansion we can build, complete with wine cellar and movie projection room as is being built within a quarter of a mile from my humble house here on the coast of Maine. I saw that the other day--and I wondered why these so very wealthy people had at least six million dollars to spend on completeluy redoing the ancient landscape here. They actualluy changed the land--the historic landscape, in order to build their six million dollar house on the coast of Maine. :eyes:

(I submit, to you all, that your own soul is worth saving. Tjat means something that we all must salvage--and I would submit that if any of you have any money that you buy some land and work it.

I did my share as a teen, and don't know how I would've survived without them.

15. Oh yeah
I can see it now, round-the-clock rants, zingers, whoooo!

The 39-years too late pardon is ironic but it's nice to see Lenny in the news.
