U.S. April death toll in Iraq passes 100

By KIM GAMEL, Associated Press Writer 37 minutes ago

BAGHDAD - Five U.S. troops were killed in separate attacks in the capital this weekend, including three in a single roadside bombing, the military said Monday, pushing the death toll past 100 in the deadliest month so far this year.

Both attacks occurred in eastern Baghdad, a predominantly Shiite area where American and Iraqi forces have stepped up their activities as part of a security crackdown that began on Feb. 14 to quell the sectarian violence.

In violence Monday, a suicide car bomber apparently targeting an Interior Ministry convoy struck an Iraqi checkpoint near a busy square in the predominantly Sunni area of Harthiyah in western Baghdad, killing four people and wounding 10, police said.

The bomber detonated his payload, causing part of the road to buckle, as he emerged from an underpass and was heading toward the checkpoint being manned by Interior Ministry commandos. Those killed included two commandos and two civilians.

6. Another hundred dead in April
And 20 more months of the Bush administration. I have a question for the Democratic leadership in Congress: A hundred dead each months, and 20 months to go means 2,000 military dead before Bush voluntarily leaves office. Just as a time-saver, since you're not interested in impeachment, could you list 2,000 servicepeople currently deployed or scheduled to be deployed in Iraq you'd like to see dead? List them alphabetically or by home town, it doesn't matter to me.

Because there are going to be 2,000 families who might want to know why you didn't try to put the brakes on this runaway a little sooner. You know, for a fact and right now, that Bush has no intention of ending the invasion, he has no clue about how to prosecute the invasion for any kind of a positive outcome, and you Congress, you alone, are in a position to do something about it.

So, as long as impeachment and removal from office is off the table, please list the 2,000 families who should be making arrangements to have a headstone carved.

8. Laying it on too thick?
I thought about 91 weeks at $2+ billion a week, but nobody really comprehends the squandering of another $200 billion, least of all Congress critters. But 2,000 mourning families seems to be a concept even some of our lesser lights can wrap their minds around.

10. How high will it go? Will September be 150?
Will October be 175?
