Bush to Democrats: do not 'test my will' on Iraq 23 minutes ago

CAMP DAVID, United States (AFP) - President George W. Bush warned Democrats Friday not to "test my will" by passing new legislation on a US troop pullout from Iraq after he vetoes a bill passed by Congress this week.

Bush invited Democrats and leaders of his Republican Party to discuss a way out of their standoff soon after he strikes down the bill, which ties 124 billion dollars in war funds to a withdrawal that would start on October 1.

"And if the Congress wants to test my will as to whether or not I'll accept the timetable for withdrawal, I won't accept one," he told a news conference at his retreat in Camp David, Maryland, alongside Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

"So if they want to try again that which I have said was unacceptable, then of course I'll veto it," Bush said.

"But I hope it doesn't come to that. I believe we can work a way forward. And I think we can come to our senses and make sure that we get the money to the troops in a timely fashion," he said.

104. Bush has a will?
He WON'T:

1) adequately train our troops, OR
2) Provide full body armor, OR
3) Armor plate all the hummers, OR
4) Provide support for our soldiers, OR
5) Respect them if they aren't Christian, OR
6) change their bed linens when they're wounded, OR
7) provide adequate time between tours of duty, OR
8) provide adequate health care for them

Is it too much to ask for just ONE democrat to say they will Test Bush's WON'T????

If you want to threaten someone, you have to use something they are afraid of.

It appears to me that both Ms Rice and Mr Bush are on weak ground, and are attempting to dissemble that with bluster.

TIGHTEN THE SCREWS, DEMS. TIGHTEN THE SCREWS.

If he gives 'em any trouble, I suggest they ask him if he's heard about HR333.

Bullies need to be CONFRONTED. It's the only thing they know, it's the only thing they fear - they'll try to use it on you first, so you'll be all nice 'n' scared and intimidated before you get up the nerve to try it on them. HAH!

How old is this prick, anyway? SIXTY?

Do you guys realize that THIS, NOW, is perhaps the very FIRST time in this useless piece of shit's life in which he's EVER been told "NO!"? Actually, I'd prefer "NO, DAMMIT, FUCKWAD!" But then again I can get kinda crude...

I don't know what negative consequences he possibly faces for vetoing the bill. His approval numbers are irreparably shot. He doesn't give a fuck what you, I, or anyone other than the super rich thinks. He doesn't even have to PRETEND to give a fuck anymore. This is, again, because there are no negative consequences for him (or even his party, since many are taking nuanced views to distance themselves while supporting the same general policy).

If you said that to his face, he'd say "fuck you. I don't care what you think, bitch."

Democracy is dead, ya know? It died in January of 2001.

This post is not a slight against you, but it's just something I could envision him saying, given what we know about the Great Emporer's character.

14. Can't stand the way the "press" calls this "legislation on US troop pullout"
As if that is the only thing being handed to Bush & Co. for signature/veto.

This is the frackin U.S. TROOP FUNDING BILL with provisions for withdrawing from Iraq.

I don't understand why he won't just sign the Troop Funding Bill and just add another of his asinine signing statements saying he does not believe he has to follow any timetable set by Congress because he is the CinC.

17. How many times have the WH or the RW machine or the press said this?
I looked for some hard quotes but didn't find much. I swear that I have heard the usuall suspects saying that
1. the measure would never pass the House
2. the measure was useless because it was going to be vetoed anyway so there was no need to pass it
3.it would never stand up to a second vote (Two HUGE wins for Pelosi-not that the Corporate press would dare mention it)
4.they would never get together with the Senate on this
5.NO WAY both houses would pass a compromise bill again
6. repeat #2 more than necessary

Now Bush wants to appear to be standing up and staring the Dems (and some Republicans who wouldn't mind getting elected again) down but no one cares anymore.

I love this. Let him veto it. Send up the next one with the deadlines moved up a day and continue until he signs it. The "narrow" wins are going to get wider and wider everytime W tries to bully them and then gets told to sit down.

20. He's demanding a ransom for our troops
This article needs to be sent to every member of the House and Senate.

I'm sorry *, but your flight-suit don't impress me. Here's why the House and Senate ought to send him a bill with a "shorter" time-line.

- The American People are not behind this pretzledent.
- Despite the best efforts of the LameStream Media, the Democrats have won this fight. The American People know that this bill funds the troops.
- Rush Limbaugh is shedding listeners and radio stations like a Border Collie in Pascagoula, MS in August. He can't do anything but drum up the "20 percenters"
- IT'S THE RIGHT THING TO DO
- The best way to deal with a bully is to stand up to him and "punch him in the mouth".
- We did not elect a king.
- We don't negotiate with terrorist.
- Everytime someone has stood up to this empty suit, he's caved.
- Impeachment is back on the table.

I could go on and on, but better yet, I'm writing a letter and an e-mail to Senator Warner. If he really believes in the power of the Senate. If he really believes that our troops should not be held hostage by a madman, then he will vote to over-ride this bullies veto.

IE, take impeachment off the table to defang the right wing noise machine. Then let the congress hold hearings into all the misadventures this criminal gang engaged in. Let the evidence build, publicly, until the public demands for impeachment of both Banana Brain and Darth Crashcart reach a crescendo.

That's the kind of political thinking that a real political leader would admire.

a battle between "us and them." Your will is, or, at least should be, irrelevant. It's the people's will you should be concerned about. The people who's will it is to end this war as soon as possible.

How a man can reach such an office with so little understanding, or, for that matter, respect for the process of government he represents is one of the great travesties of our time.

47. What a fool...
All the Dems have to do is keep pushing this bill back into his face, while working on the needed votes to over-ride the veto and pass it with 2/3's...I'm sure there are some Republics that can use some pork, just bribe them (the way they do) plus wasn't there like 3 Dems that voted against it? Get the 2 we can to vote for it (Liberman's a lost cause). Just keep pushing it back in his face....

49. I'm sorry, did you just tell the American people, YOUR employer, to fuck themselves?
Did you also just tell the military and their families that much much more of them have to die to make your rich crony friends richer until 1.20.2009?

This piece of restaurant quality SHIT and the asswipes that made the elections close enough to steal boil my BLOOD!! Resign NOW, fucko. You no longer have the rubber-stamp congress of your first term and now your crying like a spoiled BRAT because you feel your reign is being challenged. You're trying to throw your weight around on a nation that hates you more than any single human being on earth, save Fred Phelps.

History is going to remember you as an ineffective legacy paper president; a megalomaniac who listened only to himself and his handlers. You chose to go tits up for the House of Saud and defense industries and the rest of America is paying the price.

But you're right about one thing. You have more in common with Reagan than you know. That's NOT a compliment, in case you were wondering.

67. bush is not playing his strong suite there
W's major leadership asset has always been carelessness and willfull ignorance of consequence, played from a position of overwhelming advantages. By framing this as a test of wills between peers rather than a minor difference to be overcome through ignoring the opinions of "lessers" (i.e., everyone but him), he has basically hog-tied himself in a losing position on unfamiliar grounds. Worse still, he thinks he's taking a position of strength when he's only coming across as an arrogant dipshit -- very toddleresque.

The "winning" position for him was to sign the bill, feigning bipartisanship, then ignore the non-binding timetable. It would hardly be the first time he's selectively applied the laws to his own liking, and not even the most egregious. He could basically continue doing whatever the hell he wants, we'd all be used to it, and nothing would change.

Now he can't sign anything except a "pure" bill, and the Democrats will use this rigidity to political advantage. Looks like he's been getting bad advice lately. Maybe Karl Rove is off his game?

"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is THE LORD when I lay my vengeance upon thee!"

94. Bush will have as much success as Newt did
Newt's downfall came, in part, because of his shutdown of the government. Even if people still blindly follow the "Support the Troops" mentality, they are mostly in favor of setting a timetable for withdrawal. If Bush continues to stubbornly refuse to compromise, and he single handedly blocks funding for the troops, he will be the one that will be blamed, not the Democrats.

Let Banana Brain veto the bill, and then bring it up in the senate again and every day, hold a cloture vote until you have a 2/3 majority to override a veto. I'd suggest that it wouldn't be too many days until you have the needed super majority, if every repug had to show the people every day on whose side they stood.

Within a week you'd have the entire repug party abandon the Fuhrer, and we could begin pulling our people out of hell. THAT'S the will of the people.
