Giuliani comes out against civil unions
Edited on Fri Apr-27-07 02:10 AM by pepperbear
Source: Raw Story

Michael Roston
Published: Thursday April 26, 2007

The political website of the New York Sun will report tomorrow that in a major reversal from an earlier position, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani now opposes civil unions between same sex partners.

An advance copy of an article sent to RAW STORY shows that the New York Republican has backed off his earlier support for civil unions, prompted by the passage of a law in New Hampshire's State Senate.

3. I just read it 3x, I don't know what kind of civil unions he would support
Mayor Giuliani believes marriage is between one man and one woman. Domestic partnerships are the appropriate way to ensure that people are treated fairly," the Giuliani campaign said in a written response to a question from the Sun. "In this specific case the law states same sex civil unions are the equivalent of marriage and recognizes same sex unions from outside states. This goes too far and Mayor Giuliani does not support it."

What an asshat!

29. He isn't bigoted.
He just puts his political aspirations ahead of what he really believes. You have to do that in order to get ahead in the two major parties. If you don't hold their party politics, then you have no chance.

36. Just with abortion, the Republicans should be the ones in favor of this.
Edited on Fri Apr-27-07 03:11 PM by ryanmuegge
The government should have no say in this, right? Keep government out of private decisions, right?

With abortion: same privacy issues apply AND as long as the free market dictates a demand for it, it's ok, right? The market is amoral, right?

7. They just don't get it
In a generation, 20-25 years, this will be a non-issue. Either the vast majority of American citizens will live in states that allow gay marriage (by any name), or gay marriage will be federal law and univerally recognized. The up-and-coming young people in their teens up to my age (31) are generally puzzled by this, and as the reactionary people die off the attitudes of the former will dominate until it becomes law.

10. Although I would see this denial of a human right corrected sooner...
I think (hope) that you're correct.

My daughters are slightly younger then you (25 & 29) and from what they've told me they and most of their friends don't understand why this is an issue either. Mind you they are very much a product of a very Progressive mother. ;)

OTOH I don't know that this change towards acceptance is just with younger people since I've seen a change in my fellow baby boomers and seniors of my parents generation. My DH's and my own family and their friends would be examples of this. I think some of this may be because as more of their (& their friends) children and grandchildren, whom they love and care about, come out of the closet they see how they struggle and feel and come to understand it's not a choice... it's not just about a sex drive... it's as much about the heart as it is/was for them. :)

at least that what he thinks he's doing . . . and nowhere does he make any kind of credible argument for WHY gay marriage is wrong . . . just that "marriage is between a man and a woman" . . . says who? . . .

guess he can now add "flip-flopper" to "criminal" on his resume . . .

19. Mr. Did Not Get Communications to Work Between First Responders after the first WTC attack
should STFU. He had something like 9 years between the first World Trade Center attack and the 2nd and the communications was an issue from the first attack but by 911 '01 he still did nothing about communications between first responders. He also wink-winked with the head of EPA that there were no toxic issues at the burning WTC site on and immediately after 911, when any fool knew that burning plastic and metals are a toxic mix. Now WTC 911 first responders have lung-related health problems.

We need to shout out these realities to the sleeping American sheeple b/c this guy should be OUT of the repug race and soon! :puke:

39. I'd also like to know if Rudy was the one who gave the order to . . .
destroy evidence at a major crime scene, i.e. to get rid of the WTC steel before it could be examined by forensic investigators . . . most of it was sold for scrap, carted off and melted down before anyone knew what was happening . . . someone had to give that order, and I'd like to know if it was Giuliani -- and if so, why? . . .

They cooked him dinner and provided him a nice home to come to after those long sad days at the time.

He called one of the gay partners "MOM."

And he'd now deny them civil union?

27. Republicans don't care if their people flip flop.
If the neocons didn't care about Bushie going from pro-choice to anti-choice ("Bush said he...favors leaving up to a woman and her doctor the abortion question." ~The Nation, 6/15/00, quoting the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, 5/78), they're not going to give another thought to this flip since it's a position they hold.

35. Color me shocked.
NOT!!!

If one has any doubt at all that the right-wing theocrats have absolute control over the politics of the Republican party, all one has to do is see how some Republican politicians will do a total 360 on some of their relatively moderate political stances all for the purpose of gaining their primary support for the GOP Presidential nomination. Bush, McCain, Guiliani...who's next?

I don't have the words to express how disgusted I am at Guiliani's "about face" on this. What a sorry, pandering son of a bitch.

flips on an established position on a rightwing extremist issue. The group they are playing to have no moral compass or concern for their blatant hypocrisy. They will simply assert that The liberal Gulianni has come around and seen the light. He'll flip on abortion if the target voters let him get away with this absurd change in attitude. Anything to win...too bad there isn't a snowballs chance in hell republicans are even in the game.

Huckabee before I'd vote for Guiliani. I don't agree with a damn thing either one of them says but at least Huckabee is honest in his positions. I have zero respect for people like McCain, Mittens and Guiliani. They reinvent themselves based on polls and political advisers. There isn't an honest bone in their bodies. How many epiphanies can a person have in a few months time? I can count on one hand the number of important issues I have changed my mind about in my entire life. These guys do it on a weekly basis. How can anyone take them seriously?
