US Senators urge India to cease military co-op with Iran

Washington, April 23:

Eight leading US senators have urged India to suspend "military cooperation" with Iran until it completely ceased its pursuit of nuclear weapons, so as to remove a "potentially serious barrier" to future cooperation between New Delhi and Washington.

In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the senators led by Jon Kyl, Republican from Arizona and Barbara boxer, Democrat from California, said "we were disturbed to read recent reports that Iran and India have agreed to form a 'joint defence working group'.

"This agreement which is purported to build off the India-Iran strategic partnership accord of 2003, will serve to undermine the efforts of the international community to isolate the regime in Tehran," they said.

Urging India to "cease all military cooperation with Iran immediately", they said "in addition, we hope that you will publicly declare your intent to refrain from further cooperation with Iran until that nation has completely and verifiably ceased its pursuit of nuclear weapons and its support for international terrorism. "Such an announcement would serve the long-term security interests of both India and the united states and remove a potentially serious barrier to future cooperation between our two nations," said the senators.

5. Now that we have vast amounts of medical and financial
information of US citizens, we dare not fuss with India? We cater to corps and businesses constantly cutting American jobs because it is cheaper to employ India's people for business. No loyalty to the US just to the bottom line. When are we the taxpayers going to put an end to being screwed?

US and India seal nuclear accord

The US and India have finalised a controversial nuclear deal after talks in Delhi between President George W Bush and Indian PM Manmohan Singh. Energy-hungry India will get access to US civil nuclear technology and open its nuclear facilities to inspection.

Mr Bush, on his first visit to India, called the deal "historic".

But he said it might be hard to get it through the US Congress, which must ratify it. India has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

<snip>
And he said "the US is looking forward to eating Indian mangoes", under an agreement to expand trade in farm products.

7. India will probably.....ignore the U.S. on this.
India desperately needs the energy from Iran. The US is effectively putting India in a no-win position, by asking them to cut off relations with Iran, so they can continue to have "good relations" with the US. But for what?

India has had a long-standing relationship with Iran. They will not switch sides now. They'll play the fence, instead.
