UK IndependentThe question that has dogged Hillary Clinton for years - long before she even announced her intention to run for the White House - is what role would be played by her husband, that mercurial, impulsive and unpredictable former president, if she won? After all, he does have something of a history.
Now we know the answer. Mrs Clinton has revealed that if she wins the battle to be president, her husband will be dispatched as far away from the White House as possible; his role will be roaming ambassador with a remit to repair America's tattered image around the world. "I can't think of a better cheerleader for America than Bill Clinton, can you?" the Democratic senator from New York told a crowd in Iowa, where she was campaigning this weekend. "He has said he would do anything I asked him to do. I would put him to work."
Mrs Clinton's plan has both positive and negative points. Setting her husband off with a global mission would give him some focus while allowing her to concentrate on running the country. It would also help her to dismiss criticisms that he was meddling in affairs of state. And it would also allow Mrs Clinton to shape the presidency as her project, rather than it being just the third instalment of the Clinton saga.
But the plan also has drawbacks. Most bluntly, who can predict precisely what her husband will do once he gets to the other side of the world - should she be elected? One thing is certain; an army of conservatives and right-wingers who hate Mr Clinton will be scrutinising his every move and watching for a mistake, whether it be as theatrical as the Monica Lewinsky affair - which resulted in his near impeachment by Congress - or something much more mundane.
