Computers overwhelmed at deadline

People who tried to file their tax returns using TurboTax or
another Intuit Inc. software product and missed the Tuesday
deadline because of the company's computer meltdown will have
until midnight tonight to file without a late penalty, the
Internal Revenue Service said Wednesday.
A giant logjam in the Mountain View company's computers might
have prevented several hundred thousand people from filing
before midnight, the IRS said. The problem affected TurboTax,
TurboTax Freedom (a free program available through the IRS
Web site) and two products used by tax preparers: ProSeries
and Lacerte.
In a "related but separate problem," some returns were not
submitted to the IRS and state tax agencies even though users
got an onscreen message saying they had been transmitted,
Intuit spokeswoman Julie Miller said.
Intuit posted a message on its Web site Wednesday telling
users to verify that their returns had been submitted by
checking their e-file status. For details, go to
http://support.turbotax.com and click on "E-file Server
Delays Resolved."
Miller said that some users will need to resubmit their
returns, but that it won't be possible for them to pay
their taxes due twice. Shes said users should not be
double-billed for electronic filing fees or the Intuit
tax product, but if they are, "we will happily refund
all of that."
