Experts: Corzine faces long recovery

Friday, April 13, 2007
ASSOCIATED PRESS

NEWARK -- After hearing the long list of broken bones New Jersey Gov. Jon S. Corzine suffered in a car crash that left him in critical condition, medical experts say his injuries could become life threatening and potential complications include lung problems and infection.

Justin Greisberg, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at Columbia University Medical Center in New York, called the injuries "devastating."

"This is a life-threatening injury. The next few days are important days," said Greisberg, who is not treating Corzine.

Corzine's femur bone was broken in two places, and it protruded through his skin. He also suffered from a broken sternum, 12 broken ribs, a head laceration and a minor fracture on a lower vertebra, according to doctors at Cooper University Hospital in Camden.

2. This is horrible. It appears he was not wearing a seatbelt. Yet if he had been...

... he probably wouldn't have had more than a bump or two. :(

8. The weird thing
I have seen all day on CNN is that of 30,000 accidents 15,000 people who did not wear seatbelts died. This means then that the other half who wore seatbelts also died? I have been trying to figure this out all day.

14. It means the 15,000 who wore seat belts lived through their accidents.
Buckle up -- and buckle up your kids. You never know who's on the road.

27. Collateral Damage?
Maybe the 15,000 who wore seatbelts were killed by the 15,000 who weren't as they flew around inside the vehicles. :eyes:

If you don't want to wear a belt, make sure you drive alone.

3. They'll have him heavily sedated and on a ventilator, I imagine -
that 12 ribs and a sternum bit is NASTY. Flail chest.

4. 12 RIBS? WTF?
Forget his leg, that will be fine. 12 ribs and the potential for a lung infection, that is highly serious. Why didn't he wear his belt? :wtf: Jon??? Had he, he would have just had a few minor injuries, maybe a fracture, but that would be it.

13. I'm shaking my head at his poor decision
The severity of his injuries is so great that it seems like a long shot for him even able to return to office, let alone pull through.

7. Media
A medical spokesman for the hospital said that one of their doctors would never have commented that it was "non life threatening" - that the comment was something that came from the media.

12. So this medical spokesman is a mind reader?
Edited on Sat Apr-14-07 12:30 AM by rocknation
Or his he a word parser? Since the non-life threatening quote was unattributed, it could very easily have been made by ANY medical personnel working on Corzine, not just a doctor. On the other hand, if the media made it up that his injuries were non-life threatening, it must have been at someone's request!

Some PR weenie fed that to the press. NJ Governors always seem to have the worst PR weenies.

10. So he's gone from non-life threatening with one broken leg
Edited on Fri Apr-13-07 11:48 PM by rocknation
to "potentionally" life threatening with twelve broken ribs. Well, no wonder, if nobody noticed the broken ribs until today!

This is beginning to turn into that joke about breaking the news that someone's pet had been killed by saying it was stuck on a roof first.

Perhaps if he'd been wearing his seat belt.

:(

15. The femur is probably the strongest bone in the body, and his snapped in 2 places?
My gods, the news gets worse all the time. I hope he pulls through, but it's going to be a long, long haul.

24. And he's not the first New Jersey Governor who's done it.
Christine Whitman broke hers skiing, James McGreevey broke his during a nighttime walk on a beach.

At any rate, it would be nice to have been told the truth about Corzine up front. I half expect them to announce that he was actually dead at the scene.

16. He should do a public service ad promoting seatbelts once he get out of the hospital
I could see him on crutches or in a wheelchair with a cast up to his hip explaining to the good people of New Jersey why he was so seriously injured while other people in the same vehicle got off with rather light injuries.

Fortunately the state's in good hands. Mr. Codey, who had to step in as acting Governor when Corzine's predecessor had to resign over his er personal issues, should have this down to an art form by now.

23. Yes. He was a special needs (handicapped?)
driver and is a casino worker in Atlantic City. He won't be charged with anything, according to a CNN report.

A 60 year old man not wearing a seat belt is just appalling.

25. True, but
you gotta put the lion's share of the blame on the person in the truck that hit his vehicle. I would say he's got the secondary blame.
