3 soldiers killed near Baghdad

Updated 1h 30m ago

BAGHDAD (AP) — Three U.S. soldiers and two Iraqi translators were
killed in two attacks south of Baghdad, the military said on Friday.
Eight soldiers were wounded.

In the worst of the two attacks Thursday, two soldiers were killed
and seven wounded in an attack on their base south of the capital.
The two Iraqi interpreters died in that attack.

The military statement said U.S. forces dispatched a quick reaction
force and attack helicopters to relieve the unit.

In a second attack Friday, the military said, one soldier was killed
and one wounded in a roadside bombing, also south of Baghdad.

The names of those killed and wounded were withheld until family
could be notified, the military said.

2. How big is such a base?
Small and lightly protected, or large and heavily protected? If it's the latter, then this is an important development.

Patrol bases are part of the new security strategy behind the "surge."
Cordon off the neighborhood, search it, and set up a permanent base there.

5. Thanks
Not significant in a military sense, then. However, it may mean that setting up such bases is not a good idea.

8. Cripes...the numbers are climbing rapidly...
My son was stationed at a large base just south of Baghdad. They were attacked on a daily basis
with IED's being lobbed over the walls. In his first two weeks there, the PX and the gym were
blown up and soldiers were killed...pretty damn scary.

According to http://icasualties.org/oif/

U.S. Deaths Confirmed By The DoD: - 3292

He got what he asked for.
That's proof of the undeniable success story that Iraq has become.
