Waxman investigation on trail of e-mails from White House officials
Source: Federal Times

By DANIEL FRIEDMAN
April 12, 2007

Agencies should preserve all e-mails they have received from or sent to White House officials who were using nongovernmental accounts, House Government Oversight and Reform Committee Chairman Henry Waxman said in letters sent April 12 to agency heads.

The request is the latest in a series of document demands in the committee’s probe into White House officials’ use of Republican National Committee e-mail addresses to conduct government business.

Congressional investigations into a possible Hatch Act violation by Lurita Doan, the head of the General Services Administration, and into the firings of eight federal prosecutors have uncovered e-mails sent by White House officials from RNC accounts. The Senate Judiciary Committee has subpoenaed e-mails that relate to the U.S. attorney firings. ~snip~

“The only existing record of these e-mails may reside on servers or backup devices within the control of federal entities,” the letter states. “For this reason, the committee requests that you preserve all e-mails received from White House officials who used ‘gwb.43.com,’ ‘georgewbush.com,’ or ‘rnchq.org’ or other nongovernmental e-mail accounts.” ~snip~

2. I'm sure there are many IT volunteers out there
who are just chomping at the bit to try and recover the "lost" files. For political or patriotic reasons? Neh -- just 'cuz they can. It's a technie's dream of doing the impossible. How do I know? I work and play with such techies all day long. One was also joking that they may call Waxman offering to "do his part for his country". I'm sure many have.
