AP Newsbreak: House panel plans hearings on Tillman, Lynch cases
By SCOTT LINDLAW Associated Press Writer
Article Launched: 04/10/2007 09:35:25 AM PDT

SAN FRANCISCO- A House committee has scheduled hearings on the string of misleading statements by the military following the friendly fire death of Pat Tillman in Afghanistan and the kidnapping and rescue of Pvt. Jessica Lynch in Iraq, congressional officials said Tuesday.

The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform will hold the hearing April 24 as part of an investigation into whether misinformation was part of a government strategy to mislead the public, two officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity because a formal announcement was scheduled for later Tuesday.

The hearings come two weeks after the Pentagon released the findings of its own twin investigations into Tillman's death, three years after his death, and four years after Lynch's kidnapping.

The committee has been quietly investigating the Tillman case since that release, and decided to add Lynch to the scope of its probe.

Beautiful! Even though we all know the truth by now, it will be good to have an official finding of the deception!

5. Beat me to it - she was a POW, not a kidnap victim
and by all accounts was treated well by the Iraqi Army.

Sorry I can't say the same for Iraqi prisoners at Abu Graib...

need it for the treason trials.

12. From what I read she wasn't even a POW
From accounts at the time Iraqis tried to return Lynch in an ambulance to an american check point only to be shot at.

Then the americans tried to say the hospital, yes a hospital, she was at was some kind of torture room. I'll try to get you the sources soon.

13. Edit: Here are the sources that say Iraqis tried to return her to americans
only to be shot at:

http://www.wsws.org/articles/2003/may2003/jess-m23.shtml

The Correspondent team had gone back to Nasiriyah to interview eyewitnesses on events and found an entirely different story. Doctors insisted that far from being ill treated Lynch had received the best treatment possible. Assigned to the only specialist bed in the hospital, and one of only two nurses on the floor, medical staff had even given blood to help her due to a shortage.

Dr Harith al-Houssona, who looked after Lynch throughout her ordeal, told the documentary, “I examined her, I saw she had a broken arm, a broken thigh and a dislocated ankle. Then I did another examination. There was no shooting, no bullet inside her body, no stab wound—only RTA, road traffic accident,” he recalled. “They want to distort the picture. I don’t know why they think there is some benefit in saying she has a bullet injury.”

....

Doctor al-Houssona also claimed that medical staff had tried to help Lynch escape two days before the snatch team arrived, placing her in an ambulance and instructing the driver to take her to a US checkpoint. The driver had to retreat back to the hospital, however, when he came under fire from American troops.

Kampfner reported that he had asked Bryan Whitman, US deputy assistant secretary of defence, to release the full tape of the rescue rather than an edited version in an effort to resolve the disparate accounts. “He declined. Whitman would not talk about what kind of Iraqi resistance the American forces faced. Nor would he comment on the injuries Lynch actually sustained. ‘I understand there is some conflicting information out there and in due time the full story will be told, I’m sure,’ he told me.”

From what I read she wasn't even a POW...Iraqis tried to return Lynch...to an American checkpoint only to be shot at...

She was merely an accident victim.

But I haven't forgotten that press conference which began with a shot of Don Rumsfeld grinning like a Cheshire cat in the wings, and ended minutes later with an officer saying that there wasn't going to be press conference. And I don't think it was an coincidence that the officer was black: there was some kind of screwup--blame it on the black guy!

4. No kidding?
Pinch me, I must be dreaming.

I am so pessimistic I don't see the light of day. Maybe things are actually changing.

Jessica Lynch! Good lord. I never thought I'd hear that name again.

7. "Tillman was killed with three shots to the forehead"
I was unaware of that interesting detail.. and sadly it re-enforces my hunch that he was fragged :evilfrown:

It's beyond sick. The Tillmans are a courageous family.

9. wow
I didn't know that either. I had not really considered that angle, it is
very disturbing. Hopefully the investigation will get to the bottom of it.
Lord knows his family deserves it after being used like prop by W and his
cronies.

10. "Fragged" is unlikely as he was revered by the troops in his platoon
at least from everything I have read and some video that was on YouTube.
I have no doubt that the highest levels (the White House) didn't want him coming home and risk his agreeing to an interview (which he had never done) and his personal well informed opinions about Bush and the War on Iraq getting out. They could have lost the entire ESPN crowd with one "Sunday conversation" with Dan Patrick.

The younger members of his platoon and all the units he served in adored him. The platoon he was with in Afghanistan had never seen action as a unit and several members were "Green" as they say. I think that the plan was to put them (HIM) in as many dangerous situations as possible and the shots directly to the head smell of sniper activity. They burned his uniform (ballistics testing?) and his diary that day. No one --NO ONE-- has been able to identify the "Afghan man" who was also on the ridge line with Tillman and the other soldier. This "AFghan man" is said to have died that day as well.

This "theory" apparently isn't so wild or outside of the norm that Olbermann and Patrick mention it in an interview with Tillman's mom.

11. yeah 'fragged' isnt the best word...
more like "killed by friendly fire on purpose"..

note too that it wasn't just 3 shots to the head, but 3 shots to the FORE head, meaning he was facing his killers at the time.. close enough to get 3 good shots but too far away to recognize him or his uniform.

these godforsaken psychopaths in the White House kill him and then try to turn him into a republican 'hero', it sickens me

20. I wouldn't go to far with the "3 shots" thing
I believe most modern assualt weapons have a 3 round burst mode. They could have done that with a single pull of the trigger.

The fact that it was to the forehead, though, that IS something.

15. I will never forget the one-star general briefing the press about
the "fierce firefight, in and out" to rescue Jessica Lynch.

That SOB should be court-martialed for being a lying sack of shit.

The Pentagon has become totally corrupted by the Bush mafia.

22. But does she actually remember what happened?
From what I've heard she has no recollection of her capture nor the aftermath of it. Wether this is true or not I'm not positive about.

I hope they force Rummy to testify, what a great day that will be.

23. I still think she has relevant information to share
At least she can talk about what she remembers leading up to incident, and from what I remember reading, she remembered enough to express concern about how her story was portrayed in the media.

I would be interested to hear whether she was discouraged from telling her story, the only story she can tell, or should it be the only one who can tell her story.

21. Yes. Show how the republicons dishonor our soldiers by lying to them and their
families and the American public.

Show how the republicons LIE and use our soldiers for REPUBLICON PROPAGANDA.

Why do republicons HATE our US soldiers and our veterans?
