Betty Ford hospitalized in California
Source: AP

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. - Former first lady Betty Ford was recovering Thursday from unspecified surgery, the office of the late President Gerald Ford said.

The surgery occurred earlier in the week and she was "recovering well" at Eisenhower Medical Center, the statement said.

No other information will be released for several days, the statement said.

Mrs. Ford is 88. Her birthday is Sunday.

After her husband's death on Dec. 26 at age 93, she went on an arduous cross-country trip accompanying his body for services in California, Washington, D.C., and to his final resting place in Michigan.

10. Wait till your 88
then you'll see. My father will be 88 this month, last month his sister died and no way could he even attended the funeral which was about a hundred miles away. When people are that age they are frail and ANYTHING is "arduous". :-(

6. i think the death of her husband really hit her hard.
at least it seemed so to me at the funeral.

so with out too much emphasis on any outcome -- this is for betty ford and her family --

Traditional Blessing and Healing Chant
Just as the soft rains fill the streams,
pour into the rivers, and join together in the oceans,
so may the power of every moment of your goodness
flow forth to awaken and heal all beings--
those here now, those gone before, those yet to come.
By the power of every moment of your goodness,
may your heart's wishes be soon fulfilled
as completely shining as the bright full moon,
as magically as by a wish-fulfilling gem.
By the power of every moment of your goodness,
may all dangers be averted and all disease be gone.
May no obstacle come across your way.
May you enjoy fulfillment and long life.
For all in whose heart dwells respect,
who follow the wisdom and compassion, of the Way,
may your life prosper in the four blessings
of old age, beauty, happiness and strength.

13. She's a woman of courage. ERA, abortion rights, straight talk; no more of this in the GOP
I remember how this woman who raised her family in the Eisenhower years made such a difference in the 70s. Her contempt for groups like "Concerned Women for America" must be boundless, as is my respect for her.
