President Vázquez Surges in Uruguay
April 4, 2007

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - More people in Uruguay are content with their president’s performance than last year, according to a poll by Factum. 60 per cent of respondents approve of the way Tabaré Vázquez is doing his job, up five points since December.

Vázquez—nominee for the leftist Progressive Encounter (EP)—won the October 2004 election with 50.45 per cent of the vote, becoming the first Uruguayan president to represent a political organization other than the Red Party (PC) and the National Party-Whites (PN-B).

Bush in March, Vázquez defended his country’s participation in Mercosur, declaring, "I favour the regional process—we are where we are, and we don’t want to leave this place. (...) Mercosur should be able to integrate other blocs, other countries in the world."
