Source: CNN POSTED: 2:01 p.m. EDT, April 3, 2007

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- A gunman shot a woman Tuesday at Atlanta's CNN Center complex. A witness who is a CNN employee saw a male shoot a black female twice near the Omni Hotel, which is part of CNN Center.

Police have a suspect in custody. The condition of the woman is unknown.

"I heard a loud bang and thought it strange that it was much louder than the normal loud noises we hear in the newsroom,' said the witness, writer Brad Lendon. "I walked around my desk to look through the glass doors."

I saw a woman on the ground next to a potted plant. A black man stood over her and fired at least two shots into her. After the shots, he looked around, his head turning in my direction. I don't know if he saw me, but at that moment the gravity of what I'd witnessed hit me. I turned away and tried to find the safest way I could out of the CNN.com newsroom."

The CNN.com newsroom, which is near the Omni, was evacuated.

Official: Woman confirmed dead after CNN Center shooting

POSTED: 3:52 p.m. EDT, April 3, 2007
* NEW: Woman dead after shooting at CNN center, official says
• NEW: The woman was pregnant
• Atlanta police describe shooting as "domestic situation"
• CNN writer witnesses man shoot woman twice near newsroom

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- A woman has died following a shooting Tuesday at the CNN Center complex, in what Atlanta police called a "domestic situation," according to a law enforcement source. The source spoke on condition that his name not be used.

The woman, who appeared to be pregnant, was shot and the gunman was then shot by a Cpt. Odell Adams, who joined Turner Security in 1996, according to a Turner spokesperson.

The man and the woman were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. The man is in "extremely critical condition," the hospital said. (Watch bleeding victim on floor, suspect at gunpoint )

A witness saw a man dragging a woman by the hair one level above where the shooting occurred. The man told him to get out of the way. Williams went to get a guard, and then saw the man apparently take the woman downstairs. He heard gunshots less than a minute later.

Every time I go through, I have to quell my agitation.

I'm a little old lady of 67 years and I had to be "wanded" and "patted down" twice.

It was my French hair barrette, made of plastic and base metal, that set off the alarm.

I hate it when people I know are in the news like that. On 9-11, one of my coworkers spent the entire morning trying to get ahold of her sister who worked a few buildings down from the WTC. They were able to watch the whole thing happen from the roof of their building. The tabloid anthrax building was about a quarter away from that same office, we'd drive past it on our way to lunch. A friend of mine was AT the WTC when the planes hit. He had to seek shelter in the lobby of one of the towers as the debris came down. He was then able to get away before the towers came down. Not fun.

Sorry, I'm unmoved and unapologetic. I still maintain it isn't flamebait, but if y'all all wanna jump on me for it, I'm game. I'm sick of seeing these headlines every single goddamn day. Start two threads in GD. In one of them post about how mean and nasty some of us women are RE issues like this, and how put-upon all the upstanding men of DU are, and in the other ask for ideas and solutions from DU men on what to do about domestic violence against women.

Count the responses on both threads and get back to me. I'm not new at this, and I'm REALLY not new to the topic here at DU.

Too bad so many men around her are more offended by the occasional broadbrush statement than they are by the numbers on domestic violence their gender is racking up.

On a scale of one to ten, how offended was I earlier when I made my initial emotional reaction to your post?

Or to put it another way, how many fingers am I holding up at the screen right now?

The problem is you are blaming our entire gender, when the problem is caused by individuals misbehaving. Most of us do not do those things, and unless we are aware of a specific problem there isn't jack shit we can do about those who do.

Citing stats on violence perpetrated on women by men has the same effect as citing statistics on crimes committed by people who are of a particular race, or how often people of a particular sexual orientation commit one kind of crime or another - The common thread is that most of us don't, we didn't choose the trait, and we who do not engage in the bad behavior are not responsible for those who do.

I dare you to go into a thread about an incident where an African-American has committed some horrible crime, post a statistic on the numbers of that crime "their race is racking up", and see what kind of reception you get.

...against my gender. Clear enough? Until the men on this site will sit up and acknowledge that, then I will refuse to be moved by your cries of "unfair, unfair!"

This is more than just stats--everything about domestic violence is tangled up in societal views and perceived gender roles. It's not at all a like comparison to black-on-white violence or white-on-black violence or even black-on-black violence, which is a much bigger problem (and there have been MANY threads posted here on that topic).

It's apples and oranges. And it still does nothing to address the issue of violence against women.

I didn't choose my gender, and I will not accept blame for bad behavior, over which I have no control whatsoever, perpetrated by other people who happen to be male. I'm not arguing against the numbers, just saying they don't have anything to do with me or with most males.

Your statements smack of misandry.

There are many more resources on the Internet for this "closet issue" than there were in the 1970s and 1980s.

Just go to Google: "male victims of domentic abuse" and you'll see what I mean.

I am sorry for your experience and I do believe you.

Stepping in and telling someone to "calm down" is incredibly rude.

I also don't need to make any explanations to you about the topics I choose to debate on this site. Last time I checked, it was a discussion forum, and I don't "argue" nearly as much as a lot of other people do.

I don't put people on ignore, and if you choose to condescend to me again, I'll respond similarly.

I also find it curious (and rather stalker-ish) that you chose to address me by my actual first name. You'd have had to gone to a LITTLE bit of trouble to even know what my first name is, and the use of it between two people who frankly aren't on terribly familiar terms is....you got it!...a little condescending. Shocker.

The conversation was between Slackmaster and Shakespeare, when you jumped in to somehow mediate, but instead ended up inciting more flames. How can you turn that around to Shakespeare calling you out??

An occasional interview does not an expert make.

50. OK, I am calm now
Edited on Tue Apr-03-07 02:07 PM by slackmaster
I get agitated whenever I think about what happened, and how "counselors" mishandled the situation. A lot of that had to do with the sexist double standard that gets applied whenever a specific situation doesn't fit the template based on the "statistics".

Thank you Radio Lady.

63. You're welcome, Slackmaster. I understand sexist double standard more than I can tell you about in
a single post.

In the early 1980s, I started a whole national organization for women who are non-custodial mothers either by choice, chance, or court decrees. We all had/have children under the age of 18 living with (usually) their natural fathers. I was hospitalized with a difficult and painful medical problem in 1980. I asked my ex-husband to take the kids until I felt better. They were ages 11 and 10, and he refused. But he did agree to take them until they were 18 years old and I paid him child support.

The organization was Mothers Without Custody, Inc., registered in Massachusetts. At its peak, Mothers Without Custody received 6,000 letters from women in this situation who all thought they were alone.

A book was written about us. I appeared on many national and local radio and TV shows and newspapers. Believe me, I had to take a bunch of flack mostly from middle class women.

Non-custodial women are now much more accepted, but occasionally I still run into someone who wanted to believe that we were "drunks, whores, or drug addicts" and we "gave away" our children.

69. You are correct. My personal situation has improved greatly. The kids
were partially raised by their biological father and stepmother until age 18. On the day of their graduations, they each returned from their small town in Vermont to our home in Massachusetts. I'm sure that seven or eight years living in a smalll ski village was less exciting than the call of the big city of Boston. While they lived in Vermont, I was one who drove 120 miles to see them and take them out to a hotel. They visited with us in the summertime and we continued to voluntarily pay child support for the entire period 1980 to 1988 under a Massachusetts court order.

My children's father died last December 1, 2006 from lung cancer. He was 70 years old and smoked cigarettes and pipes for decades. Now he is gone and my children had a real chance to get to know him and their stepmother during their teenaged years.

By the way, my husband and I raised the three kids from his first marriage. According to my calculations, I was a full-time mother of two and then all five children from 1968 until 1980. I think I served my time!

The woman was the victim; she has now died according to CNN.

The man was the shooter and is in critical condition. Assumption is that security shot him.

I could be wrong, but...

Are you sure of your facts?

Are you sure of your facts?

My post consisted of some sarcasm and a personal revelation that was relevant in the context of the post I responded to.

ETA I wish to also note that one of the most common thread killers on DU works like this:

1. Member of group A does something bad to member of group B.

2. Different member of group B points out that group B is often victimized by members of group A.

3. Different member of group A points out that most members of group A do not engage in that type of bad behavior.

4. Pandemonium erupts, since about half of DU is a member of each respective group.

what they think.

The sad truth is that all of the women in my life -- and there have been a lot -- who have been raped, molested, beaten, and generally sexually/physically abused have been victims of men.

It's ugly, but there it is.

39. Yup. Kinda hard to ignore those numbers.
So if a few men get their feelings hurt, well, too bad. I suggest they turn their anger towards those of their gender who do this shit, instead of turning it towards those of us who speak up about it.

The irony is especially rich, isn't it?

But I'm not about to argue with a Gun Apologist. I shouldn't have done so in the first place, because I should have known better.

Just curious. I don't expect you to provide anything resembling a realistic answer, so no pressure.

As I commented earlier there is a gaping hole in the restraining order system in most states - People who get restrained ought to be actively disarmed in some reasonable timeframe. But even that is moot in this case becase the RO was never executed.

You can argue that premise until you're blue in the face, but you'll never convince me that it's not true.

Thanks for your candor.

People have legitimate needs for self-defense against other people, and handguns are among the most effective weapons for that purpose.

They are also used for target shooting, hunting, and collecting of course.
