3. The Real is the hard kernel that resists symbolicity
For instance, shrapnel. You can't spin it or negotiate with it. You can talk about it, and use words for it, but the words themselves create the gulf between the shrapnel that cuts and the shrapnel that can be discussed, or not discussed, or emphasized, or de-emphasized. The Real is that hard kernel that stands outside our capacity to render things as symbols.

For all those spin doctors and voluminous white paper writers, for all those speech writers and think tankers, for all those pollers and responders, sign-makers, and flag wavers, for all those who have loved this war, and lived it in the realm of the symbol, shrapnel can only ever say one thing:

Welcome to the Desert of the Real

BAGHDAD, April 3 (Reuters) - Four U.S. soldiers were killed in combat in Iraq
on Monday, the U.S. military said, bringing the U.S. death toll since the
invasion to 3,257.

Two U.S. soldiers and a Marine were killed in separate attacks in the volatile
western Anbar province, the heartland of the Sunni Arab insurgency.

One soldier died and three were wounded when a large truck bomb exploded
outside a police station in the disputed northern city of Kirkuk. Two
policemen and 10 civilians were also killed.
