Brace for more pain at the pump

By Kevin G. Hall
McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON - Oil prices jumped $1.95 a barrel Thursday and $3.20 over the past two days amid seasonal shutdowns at U.S. refineries and escalating tensions in the Persian Gulf region. That means rising gasoline prices in the weeks ahead.

Oil prices settled at $66.03 at the close of trading Thursday on the New York Mercantile Exchange, the highest closing price since last September.

"There are just so many bullish factors pushing prices higher," said Michael Fitzpatrick, the vice president of energy risk management at FIMAT USA, a commodity brokerage in New York.

Among them are U.S. refinery shutdowns to switch to producing summer fuels, a strike in France that's affecting European supplies and oil traders' fears that Middle East tensions could erupt into violence.

3. I can't believe more people aren't screaming about it yet.
I guess that last episode of $3.00 per gallon gas just made Americans numb to it.

5. Yeah, but that's not influenced by this crap...
Plus, dino-diesel seems cheaper compared to gasoline than it was a few months ago--regular and #2 are about the same now where I am.

When unleaded hits north of $3.50, every fry shack in the country is going to have people fighting each other over the oil they used to throw away.

As Bob the Builder say, "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!"

9. Peak Oil plus an arrogant fool in the White House
Just read some of the appropriate threads over on Energy and Environment. The "Peak Oil" issue is real, and it's kicking in NOW.

This isn't to say cynicism is unwarranted. We have the worst leader in US history now, and everything he touches turns to bullshit.
