HHS Official Resigns Amid Mass. Debacle
By KEVIN FREKING
Associated Press Writer

March 29, 2007, 6:42 PM EDT

WASHINGTON -- The head of the federal agency responsible for providing women
with access to contraceptives and pregnancy counseling resigned unexpectedly
Thursday after Medicaid officials took action against him in Massachusetts.

The Health and Human Services Department provided no details about the nature
of the Massachusetts action that led to Dr. Eric Keroack's resignation.

Just five months ago, Keroack was chosen by President Bush to oversee HHS' Office
of Population Affairs and its $283 million annual budget. The pick angered Planned
Parenthood and other pro-abortion rights groups that viewed him as opposed to birth
control and comprehensive sex education. Keroack had worked for an organization
that opposes contraception.

5. no he is the guy
that said that birth control was bad, he had some wacko theory about hormones. He was the last person who should have been the person for that committee. The guy who forced anal sex on his wife was picked to be on the FDA. Also a hideous choice. Also against birth control. These guys know how to pick em.

Controversial birth control official steps down

Fri Mar 30, 2007 12:50am ET160

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A controversial U.S. health official, Dr. Eric Keroack, has stepped down from his position overseeing programs that include birth control for poor women, the Health and Human Services Department said....

(edit)

...The Planned Parenthood Federation of America welcomed the news. "It's a good day for women's health. Keroack was unqualified to run the nation's family planning program," PPFA president Cecile Richards said in a statement.

"The Bush administration must replace Keroack with a legitimate, mainstream public health expert who supports family planning and access to birth control. More than 17 million women in our country need access to affordable birth control. The nation's family planning program should be run by a champion for women's health and safety," Richards said.

As head of the Office of Population Affairs at HHS, Keroack oversaw a program that funds birth control, pregnancy tests, breast-cancer screening and other health services for 5 million poor women annually.

Keroack previously served as medical director for A Woman's Concern, a chain of Boston-area pregnancy clinics that discourage the use of birth control and advocate abstinence as a way to avoid pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
