Tornado swarm kills 3 in 2 states

By ROCHELLE HINES, Associated Press Writer
17 minutes ago

OKLAHOMA CITY - An early spring storm swept across the Plains early Thursday,
spinning off tornadoes that killed an Oklahoma couple in a home that was blown to
pieces and a Colorado woman whose small town was nearly destroyed.

A tornado as wide as two football fields carved a destructive path through Holly,
Colo., late Wednesday, destroying five homes, damaging dozens more and littering
the streets with broken power lines, tree limbs and debris.

A 28-year-old woman who suffered massive injuries during the twister died after
she was airlifted to a hospital in Colorado Springs, Prowers County Coroner Joe
Giadone said Thursday.

A husband and wife were killed near Elmwood, Okla., when the storm blew apart
their home, said Dixie Parker, Beaver County's emergency management director.

1. Yesterday in Denver, CO we had the strongest winds we've ever had...
and then last night we got 2-3 inches of snow. All the trees that had started blooming are probably going to die now.

12. Thanks, you too.
I'm in central OK, south OKC area right along I-35. Looks like maybe later this afternoon we'll have to keep up with the news. I always do, even when it's just a slight risk, though. I'm a little worried about tomorrow because I have to work all morning (and leave my dogs home alone)and so far they're not saying much about what to expect.

I'm not a native Okie so I find this kind of weather very frightening.

4. People still talk about the F5 that hit Xenia Ohio back in 1974,
but it seems that we're having several Xenias a year now!

Anyone who disputes global warming should try boiling water. Set the pot over low heat and you'll see a couple of streams of bubbles rising from the bottom. Turn up the heat and you'll see explosive churning as water converts to steam throughout the volume. Now apply that observation to our atmosphere!

5. Can you incorporate chicken wire into your scientific model?
I simply can't understand a complex model of the earths climate without a chicken wire scale model and maybe some sterno pan warmers.

6. I was wondering how long someone would call up the specter of global warming.
Back in the 70's, every time there was a weather anomaly, I had a old, grey, shriveled nanny teacher who called it the wrath of Jesus and called on the end-of-days as predicted in Revelations.

Now I know that G-W is happening, but to blame every tornado or hurricane or blizzard or ______ is alarmist. There were these things before humans and there will be even worse after humans.

Let the flame-war begin!

9. No single tornado or hurricane can be attributed to global warming.
I was referring the frequency and severity. An event such as happened in Xenia in 1974 was unique enough for people to remember. Now it seems that we're getting bad tornadoes year round across a wider and wider area.

15. False assumption about global warming...
Global warming doesn't create adverse weather. It makes naturally-occuring adverse weather events more severe.

18. The width of a football field is about 160 feet.
So the width of two football fields is 320 feet. Some wedge tornados can approach 1 mile wide, which is 16 1/2 times wider then the width of two football fields.

20. The length of a football field is only 360 feet
A mile is 5280 feet.

In fact, there was a tornado in 2004 that was 2.5 MILES wide!!!

Sixty-five tornadoes were reported in Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Colorado and
Nebraska on Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.

One twister killed an Oklahoma couple as it blew their home to pieces. A Texas
man was found dead in the tangled debris of his trailer, and a woman died of
her injuries early Thursday after the Colorado tornado threw her into a tree.

The massive storm system stretched from South Dakota to Texas on Thursday
morning, threatening flash flooding in central Nebraska and Kansas and more
severe weather farther south.
