Iraqi police targeted in assassination attempt, car bomb ploy
BAGHDAD (CNN) -- Baghdad police said insurgents used a dead body stashed in a parked car to lure two Iraqi police officers to the vehicle on Thursday. When police approached, the explosives-rigged car exploded, killing them.

The blast also wounded six officers nearby, police said.

The incident occurred at 8 a.m. in the Amil neighborhood in southwest Baghdad.

Thirty minutes later in northern Baghdad's Qahira neighborhood, gunmen attempted to assassinate the Iraqi chief of traffic police.

Police said the chief survived, but two of his security guards were killed and two others were wounded in the attack.

In southern Baghdad two civilians were killed and six others were wounded when a roadside bomb exploded on a busy market street, police said.

13 policemen arrested for Iraqi town massacre 29 minutes ago

MOSUL, Iraq (AFP) - Iraqi authorities have arrested 13 policemen for carrying out a massacre of 70 Sunni Arabs in a northern Iraqi town to avenge a devastating bomb attack, officials said on Thursday.

On Tuesday, a suicide bomber blew up a truck in a Shiite district of Tal Afar -- a town rated in 2006 by US President George W. Bush as a symbol of a stable Iraq -- and killed 85 people and wounded 183 others

At least 70 people were killed, while 30 were wounded and 40 more remain missing in one of the worst sectarian attacks in Iraq in recent months.

An Iraqi army source told AFP that 13 policemen have been detained for the mass killings.

More than 50 bodies of the executed victims have been moved to a hospital Mosul, the capital of Nineveh province which is home to Tal Afar, along with two ambulances ferrying women who were wounded in the rampage.

3. police have been released
MOSUL, Iraq, March 29 (Reuters) - Policemen who took part in the reprisal shootings of scores of men in northwest Iraq this week were arrested but then freed again to prevent unrest, the provincial governor said on Thursday.

Hours after truck bombs killed 85 people on Tuesday in a Shi'ite area of Tal Afar, up to 70 Sunni Arab men were shot dead in a town which only a year ago was held up by U.S. President George W. Bush as an example of progress towards peace.

Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, a Shi'ite, has ordered an inquiry into reports the gunmen included policemen from his Shi'ite-dominated security forces.

"Yes, there are policemen who are involved," the governor of Nineveh province, Durad Kashmula, told a news conference in the regional capital Mosul.

"They have been arrested but released afterwards due to the demonstrations and to deter strife," he said, referring to protests in Tal Afar on Wednesday. But he said the culprits would be brought to justice in due course.

The mosque and four adjacent stores were slightly damaged, according to a police officer at the scene who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the media.

By Ahmed Rasheed

BAGHDAD, Iraq, March 29 (Reuters) - Suicide bombers killed more than 100 people in a Shi'ite neighbourhood of Baghdad and in a mainly Shi'ite town north of the Iraqi capital in a wave of sectarian violence on Thursday, police said.

A suicide bomber killed around 60 people in a market in the Shaab district of northern Baghdad, police sources said, in what appeared to be the latest in a string of attacks on Shi'ite districts and towns.

At about the same time, three suicide car bombs exploded within minutes of each other in Khalis, 80 km (60 miles) north of Baghdad, killing about 50 people and wounding scores, police and hospital officials said.

The blasts follow a sharp upsurge in sectarian bloodshed, particularly outside the Iraqi capital, that has killed scores. Iraq has been swept by violence between majority Shi'ites and minority Sunnis that has killed tens of thousands.
