I know of two young men, one in his twenties and the other in his thirties, who got cancer. They are both still with us but it's been a big battle for the both of them.

the food chain is contaminated with all of this GMO food.

This particular generation has been heavily exposed to many toxins as well and many of us grew up in places where refineries, etc. were running unregulated.

I spoke with a young woman the other day that was 23 years old and was advised to get a mammogram for no specific reason. It was a total :wtf: moment for me.

I really believe the the toxins in the environment and the GMO'd food (and non-GMO'd food) are the culprits.

is that Organic garners a premium on the food isles that most americans can not afford, or at least think they can not afford. A dozen eggs, .99 or 3.99? A box of granola, 1.99 or 5.99? Oatmeal, .99 or 3.99? You get my point. When you are trying to feed a family of four on 30k, you are most likely NOT buying organic.

The good news is that prices have been trending down lately...here is a good article if you are trying to eat more organic foods. It is short and has a couple of really good tips.

I do it on far less than that.

Join Costco - they sell many organic foods now at a tremendous discount.

Don't buy any more red meat. It costs too much anyway and it is not good for you.

Buy what you can afford to buy (like bulk organic oatmeal, flour, etc.) and learn to cook these good foods. I make an organic lasagna that makes about 10 huge servings for about $10.

I don't eat eggs myself so I don't care if I buy a dozen once in a great while for a bit more.

There is a local farmer's market too with organic produce that is a lot less than Safeway's pesticide ridden produce.

When things are on sale that keep, stock up.

You have to be a smart shopper and know where to go.

...look at all the chemicals and "additives" that have been added to our food supply over our lifetimes. I ate a LOT of meat, etc., as a kid, and I really don't want to think about all the carcinogens I've ingested over the years. Too late now, anyway. I think that's part of it. Also, I think we've become more aware of the disease and people aren't hiding it like they may have had in years past.

The only saving grace with the brain cancer was that he was never in pain.
I guess that is not uncommon when the cancer originates in the brain (not sure why)

There are MANY reasons for delays on treatment and not necessarily due to negligence. Maybe the lesion in the pelvis was stable and they just found the liver lesion by accident. Sometimes they check, and re-check a problem area but they do not screen other body parts. :shrug:

I have seen people postponing tests cause they are TOO AFRAID to find out they have cancer again. This happens with patients who suffered from cancer and underwent very painful treatments. Sometimes it is that they are too optimistic cause they are doing so well. You never know, maybe he knew about this but was too busy to do something about it. You cannot operate on someone who doesn't want to be treated. Of course, it could be negligence.

Probably he has colon cancer metastatic to the liver, not primary liver cancer (quite rare in the US).

If he has only a few masses in the liver, they may be resectable or amenable to radiosurgery. Otherwise he would probably get chemotherapy. Some people will do fairly well for a while (i.e. a couple of years) if their liver disease can be resected.

she is living to tell though. She wasn't ready to give up and die and she hasn't. All I can say is thank god she had good health insurance because that makes all the difference in the world in a battle like this. For example, she just got her bill from the hospital and one, just one of her non-chemotherapy prescription drugs was over $8,000. Her insurance picked up 90% of it but she's still stuck with over $800 for this one drug that she doesn't even know the name of. A total abdominal hysterectomy a few months back cost around $80,000 (and it turned out that it was unnecessary too). A month's supply of Zofran sublingual for nausea is over $3,000. The Marinol is around a grand too I believe. Same for the narcotics. Lab test after lab test is running into the thousand dollar/month range and then there's the Chemo itself and, possibly, radiation therapy which will be tens of thousands of dollars. As I said, a battle against cancer is all about health insurance. She struggled and clawed her way out of poverty in her youth and managed to get a job with good benefits which has been a major blessing but I know there are many others who are not nearly so fortunate.

I survived cancer a ways back and so I feel for him. I also know that job of lying to the nation contributed to this. When I had my cancer removed I was healthy for a good bit, but then I went through a time of high stress in my life and it showed up again.

41. My dad had many cancers and lived about 15 years with them. He

had skin, prostate, bladder, colon, liver, spleen cancer and finally leukemia. He had his spleen removed in 2001 but they found a spot on his liver. His checkups showed he was doing okay with it. Then last year, he got sick, went into the hospital and was diagnosed with acute myloid leukemia. He died within a week.

I may not like Tony Snow's politics but he has a family and they will suffer with him as he fights this cancer. I wish nothing but the best and my prayers are with him and his family.

However, the point that Elizabeth Edwards was making with her own cancer illness, a point which Katie Couric had missed, is that you drive on with your life, keep a positive attitude, follow doctors' orders, and...just continue to live your life to the fullest.

On that note, I wish the best for Tony. And for Katie, there are so many cancer sufferers going through the debilitating chemo/radiation treatments that it is unconscionable not to take their reaction to their own illness at face value. Cancer that has metastasized is not something you politicize.

My brother died of metastasized cancer of the liver. He was only 42 years old! He went the chemo route (which was pretty dumb really but he thought he'd try for the 5% chance of beating it I guess with the chemo) and he was dead in 6 months. :(

I didn't realize that Snow had actually had his colon removed and wore a bag. It seems a shame that so radical a treatment such as this still didn't stop the spread of cancer.

Did he have chemo when he had the intial cancer? I can only assume that the cancer had mirco-metastized before his colon was removed.

and they never mentioned removing it. He underwent months of chemo and basically dropped dead in the bathroom. He was 42 years old.

The year before that, my mother died of the same thing: Metastasized cancer; point of origin unknown. She lasted 3 months and was under Hospice care as was my brother (given less than 6 months to live with this diagnosis). :(

Which organ? I don't know which one. They thought maybe the ovaries with my mother and wanted to operate to see if this was true. I told them no begin it was too late.

I keep thinking about that "West Wing" episode, where President Bartlett wanted to put a JFK-esque announcement in the State of the Union that the US would put its resources behind curing cancer by the end of the decade. Those lines were eventually taken out of the speech, for various political reasons.

But the thought that a president might make such a bold declaration, and then back it up with requests for massive funding, is a wonderful fantasy. Maybe Mrs. Edwards and Mr. Snow will help us get to that day, sooner rather than later.

He is going to have to quit, he need to concentrate on his treatment. The media won't tell how bad the liver CA is and hopefully is a small lesion. Small lesions can be contained with cryosurgery and chemo.

I feel for him and his family, specially his young kids. I wonder if the stress of having to come up with lies made the cancer come back with a vengeance (stress alone can induce cancer). Snow, 51, who beat colon cancer two years ago, disclosed that it has returned and spread to his liver, delivering a brutal blow to his family and friends and to a White House already reeling under a relentless barrage of bad news.

It was the latest demoralizing event after weeks that included the conviction of a former White House aide, a guilty plea by another former official, the resignations of several other officials and a drumbeat of revelations that have jeopardized the attorney general's job.

And at a time of siege, with Bush wrestling with Congress for control of the war in Iraq, Snow's absence while he undergoes treatment will deprive the president of his most prominent public advocate. In his year at the White House lectern, Snow has become the public face of the Bush presidency, a forceful yet upbeat defender of an embattled administration whose verbal jousting and television celebrity made him a popular figure in Republican circles, even when his boss was not.

The matter clearly was on his mind last week as he replied to questions about whether Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales would remain in his job until the end of Bush's term. "As a cancer survivor, I don't know if I'm going to be alive at the end of this term," Snow told reporters on Air Force One on March 20.

But he played down the situation to colleagues. When doctors operated Monday, they found that the cancer had returned and spread, with tumor cells on his liver. Snow called Bush about 7 a.m. yesterday to tell him the news. "His attitude is, one, that he is not going to let this whip him, and he's upbeat," Bush told reporters. "My attitude is that we need to pray for him and for his family. . . . My message to Tony is: 'Stay strong. A lot of people love you and care for you and will pray for you.' "

Snow called Perino to tell her at 9:30 a.m., just before she went to the briefing room for the morning "gaggle," a more informal, non-televised briefing. She began sobbing as she made the announcement, took a few questions and then postponed any others until a later briefing.

"It was hard news for us," she explained. "I didn't cry until this moment." But Snow, she said, was up and walking around: "He was in very good spirits. He was trying to help me with some talking points."
