19. Not much we can do
You can get really upset, but there isn't much you can do, the average person on the street is not going to go against this any more than they will go against getting a new Wal-Mart ( which is equally as bad for the comunity) . Even the NRA is now getting into news to avoid the campaign finance reform laws. We have seen the AARP proudly screw their members to get a piece of the pie and things are only going to get worse. The only hope we have is some day a person with the finacial capability will get involved to start a movement for more independent views. Perhaps we should petition to George Soros to buy into a large media to get out the independent message. Knoweldge is a powerful thing and he who controls what people think will control the world. Unfortunately it all takes money, something, most that care about freedom and independence have never worried about.

32. Um. Good idea, but ditch the Soros angle.
Despite his gift to MoveOn, he is most assuredly not a person we should trust. He invested millions with the Carlyle Group, is connected to the NED (which funded anti-Chavez groups during the US-backed aborted coup), funded Georgian groups in the "velvet revolution" Great Game gambit-for-oil - he isn't One of the People, he's One of the Elites.

4. Same here
I have three Ultimate TV receivers and two regular ones to sell on ebay now. Guess it's Dish Network since my cable provider would be Adelphia....another crook.

15. Ah, hell. I didn't think of that.
Dammit! I love Link! I've even been on the air - called in a half dozen times during Zogby's show (usually while at work), got to speak with Rachel Corrie's parents once.

Man. Now I'm all bummed. :(

20. Move to DISH TV...we did when we heard that Murdoch wanted
to acquire DIRECTv. They have a much better product anyway. The equipment is better, the prices are lower, and you can get local channels too. Beside they have both the Link channel AND FSTV (another progressive channel). We've not had to utilize their customer support line once and I used to spend hour on the phone with DIRECT's people. When I called to cut services, I told them that it was because I wouldn't purchase a service owned directly by Rupert Murdoch, and that was just when they were talking about acquisition.

28. And then there's the educational channels on Dish.

University of Washington, University of California, University house channel, Research channel.

These are a wonderful resource for truth. Chomsky was on U of C last night in a speach he did some time ago (wish they would show original dates). And you'll get some truths not on major media by watching the little programs on these channels. Programs that feature leading people in their fields who don't spew the admin line.

I wouldn't give up Dish if DTV gave me free equipment and programing. My access to knowledge is far more valuable.

16. Sadly, NWI is not all that great.
Since I work here and essentially watch tv for a living (and no, it's not glamorous!), I've seen a lot of NWI...and some of it really sucks.

Some of it's been awesome, but I've noticed lapses in coverage. Considering Vivendi-Universal owns them, I'm not surprised.

I did write to Evan Solomon to commend his professionalism after he interviewed Kissinger - I wouldn't have been able to sit still in the same room with that murderering sonofabitch.

22. When I compared Dish and DirecTV
DirecTV came out on top, price wise. There are more channels I like on Dish, but the way they put together their "packages" it would cost me more on Dish to get the programming I want. I sure wish they'd sell channels a la carte. They could give you basic service and they should allow you to chose your own packages of 10 or 15 channels each.

23. Similar Here
If it were just a matter of price, I'd have switched already, but TrioTV is an island of quirky, intelligent, general entertainment TV in a sea of refuse. No NWI, either. When Dish adds those two, I'll reconsider in a heartbeat.

You can set it from the "guide channel" and never have to miss anything again..

We have the everything package with all the local channels. I get 3 or 4 PBS channels..

The only drawback is that I wish it had CBC.. My son (near SanFrancisco) has Comcast and they get CBC..

When I signed up for DISH I told them it was because of their liberal channels they carried as much as anything.. When you sign up they will give you "cards", and if someone else signs up and gives your card to the installer YOU get $5 a month off your bill:)

I am happy to cancel Adelphia..

Dish Network and DirecTV were in some merger talks last year. Fortunately, something happened in the negotiations and the deal fell through. I am so glad its not Dish he's picking up!

31. Actually
Direct and Dish were talking about merging specifically because Murdoch was DirectTV's only other option. Their board had turned down a previous Murdoch offer. It was Murdoch who put pressure on the FCC to deny the merger.

a couple of months ago and we decided to switch to Dish Network at that time. And on Dish you get Free Speech TV. Now I just need to find an alternative to my DirecPC.

33. He's been pushing for this for a long time.
He tried to gain control of our commercial communications satellites years ago. When he was rejected in his quest by the Clinton Administration, he threatened (and made good on his threat) to build a right wing news network that would trash Clinton. Clinton didn't want our communication satellites controlled by foreign interests. The Repubs don't have any such qualms.

This is just payback to Murdoch for getting the Repubicans elected. I suspect that Murdoch is really apolitical (his Sky network in Britain leans toward the Liberal side). This is just how he gets what he wants.

Remember the James Bond flick "The World Is Not Enough"? The main villan is patterned after Rupert Murdoch.
