Source: CBS Evening News

9 Officers will face charges connected to the death of former NFL Star Pat Tillman.. Of the 9 Officers charged 4 of them are generals...( More details)

WASHINGTON (KCBS) -- CBS News has learned that an investigation by the Pentagon inspector-general into the "friendly fire" death of San Jose's own football-star-turned-soldier, Pat Tillman, will blame nine officers, including four generals, for failing to follow regulations and using poor judgement in a series of missteps that kept the truth of how he died from his family for more than a month.
The official version was that the former NFL player had died in a firefight with the enemy and it was only after a national televised memorial service was held that Tillman's wife and parents were told he had been mistakenly shot by one of his own men.

Until now only the soldiers who were part of Tillman's unit of Army Rangers have been disciplined for the events which resulted in his death. It will be up to the Army to decide what if any disciplinary action will be taken against the nine officers.

Edited to include link and excerpt.

All of our dead soldiers were killed by these generals, in one way or another.

In May of 2002, Tillman turned down a $3.6-million contract with the NFL Arizona Cardinals to enlist in the Army. He fought in Iraq, then Afghanistan, where he died in April of 2004.

9. When you have to choose between bad and worse, ALWAYS CHOOSE BAD.

A) A pro athlete gives up a multi-million dollar career to volunatarily fight in Gulf War II and is killed by friendly fire within days.

B) Military officers are facing charges because they tried to cover up the fact that a pro athlete gives up a multi-million dollar career to enlist to voluntarily fight in Gulf War II and is killed by friendly fire within days.

Yes, telling the truth about Tillman's death would have been a public relations nightmare. But what would you call what they're dealing with now? But had they told the truth up front, everyone could have long since been past it. Friendly fire isn't a crime--covering it up is.

11. Exactly
I'm glad the family pressed on this.

It just shows how much of this whole war was manufactured by the administration with the help of the media.

12. He didn't volunteer to fight in Gulf War II.
He volunteered to fight in Afghanistan. When he was sent to Iraq, he insisted that it was an illegal war, and was an avid fan of Noam Chomsky, whom he planned to meet on his return home.

13. I thought he was killed in Afghanistan
Edited on Fri Mar-23-07 10:16 PM by daleo
"The two brothers completed training for the elite Army Ranger school in late 2002 and were assigned to the second battalion of the 75th Ranger Regiment in Fort Lewis, Washington. Both Pat and Kevin were deployed to the Middle East as part of the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Tillman was subsequently redeployed to Afghanistan, where, on April 22, 2004, he was killed in action by friendly fire while on patrol."

I can see where the confusion came from, though.

On edit - Sorry, I misread your post, thinking you were saying he was killed in Iraq. Clearly, that wasn't your point. But the wiki article is still good, so I will keep the link here.

4 Generals Among 9 Called 'Responsible' in Tillman Case
Lt. Gen. Philip Kensinger, Ret., Reportedly Will Be Highest Ranking General Blamed in Pentagon Reportv

March 24, 2007 — ABC News has learned a three-star general will reportedly be among those accused of mishandling the information released about the death of former NFL star Pat Tillman, who killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan in April 2004.
(snip)

The men who were with Tillman that day knew he was killed by friendly fire. A number of high-ranking officers at least had strong indications, according to the Pentagon's report, which is due out on Monday.
(snip)

A senior defense official tells ABC News the Pentagon will hold nine army officers responsible for that mistake, including four generals. The highest ranking is reportedly Lt. Gen. Philip Kensinger, now retired. Kensinger was commander of U.S. Army Special Operations at the time of Tillman's death.

The Tillman family was initially told that he was killed by enemy fire, even though his fellow soldiers knew that was untrue.
